Italian term

ideale péndant

Italian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Describing work by Giorgio de Chirico.

"... mentre Eugenio Montale ne acquistò l’ideale péndant, 'La confessione'."

Now, I know that 'pendant' can be used to describe one of a pair of artworks, a sort of companion piece to another artwork. And I know in Italian, it can be used in a similar way, to describe one of two matching items, one of a pair, a counterpart to something.

I'm not clear here if "ideale pendant" is an established thing, both words together, or if it is a "pendant" that is being described in some way as "ideale".

There's no indication of what the work might be a companion piece to.

This may be the actual work, although I'm not 100% sure. The date would fit. It may be a clue, in any case.

As always, any suggestions welcomed.

I was going to close this without grading (there are no answers to grade), but since Phil and Simon put me back on the right track, if either wanted to post an answer and get the KudoZ, I would be happy to award them.
Simon Charass Mar 12, 2015:
pendant (senza accento)
[Garzanti Online]
Giusi N. Mar 12, 2015:
Pendant: ho trovato il termine, senza accento: i sinonimi sono: riscontro, corrispondenza, complementarità, simmetria. Correspondence? Does this help?
James Stuart (asker) Mar 12, 2015:
good question, Phil ... good point, Simon A case of not seeing the wood for the trees, I fear. The full sentence goes:

So, it would follow that the work acquired by Montale was the conceptual/theoretical twin of (one of) these works?

That seems a bit more promising. How does it sound to you folks?

Somehow got fixated on the two words in isolation, thinking it was a single term ... Ho hum ...
apologies for the misdirection.
Simon Charass Mar 12, 2015:
@ James Here I think “ideale péndant” means that there is another version of the artwork, which was acquired by Eugenio Montale.
Phil, here is the entry for “ne” by the Garzanti Online:
philgoddard Mar 12, 2015:
You say there's no indication of what the work might be a companion piece to, but what does "ne" refer to?
Marco Solinas Mar 12, 2015:
To: Asker If you search "pendant ideale" (reversing the order of the words), you will find that "ideale" is used as a modifier of pendant, supporting your second hypothesis.
