retta dalla linea di contorno

Any ideas how to put this?

Thanks very much.

upheld/borne out/supported by the outline/contours

retta is past tense of reggere

what this is saying is that the outlines support the idea that this statue was conceived as a single unit and the outline reinforces this concept,
Peer comment(s):

agree Neptunia : this makes much more sense to me - because the contours aren't really straight and "dalla" can't be ignored here

straight in its outlines

I believe what the author is saying that in these sculptures you can see the taste, at the time, for having uniform or homogenous statues, in the sense that the outline is essentially a straight line, the sculpture is one big, solid, unified mass.
This would be in contrast to later greek sculptures, such as the discobolus, which has limbs that extend outward, breaking the idea of a straight line. (you can see the difference easily if you google "Geneleos group" and compare the two).
