Height of shelf I thought this idea was quite common. It usually means that up on a long-forgotten shelf some rare treasures have been hidden and are waiting to be discovered, usually by somebody conscientious enough to search up there.

@ Phil: maybe it is implying that the books were considered of no interest and were stored up where most people wouldn't look, unless they happened to be from the local museum and realised what they were worth!

That's why I'm trying to get some context, Wendy. As I understand it, rastrellare can mean randomly scooped or carefully hunted down. I'm not sure "one of those" quite works - "some" might be better. And why is the height of the shelf relevant?

I don't think there is an exact match to "rastrellare" that could be used with "hand". "Individually selected" might cover the idea.
