Maybe I\'m not a refined somelier, but if you check the recipes above, you can see that a pickle is not only a brine or vinegar solution in which foods are preserved. Anyway I\'m not an expert...so don\'t take for granted my suggestion.

apple mostarda

To call "mostarda" a pickle is a bit like calling Barolo an alcoholic beverage. It really deserves to be called by its own name, with an explanation if necessary.

However, your decision will depend on the context and the degree of precision that is appropriate. Apple mostarda is a specialty of Mantua, and rather different from the mixed-fruit Cremona version. There are, of course, many other kinds of "mostarda".

Buon appetito,

Giles
Peer comment(s):

agree Luciana Cortelazzi : yes, you can call it pickle, chutney, jam or whatever, but mostarda is only mostarda

agree Danette St. Onge : I wouldn't call it "apple pickles" either. I would either leave it as "mostarda" w an explanation, or just write "spicy apple condiment" or something of the sort.
