Italian term

cabala

Italian to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) share market
No context, just one of a number of similar newspaper headlines:

Il futuro dei mercati? Lo prevede la Cabala.

and

La Cabala dei mercati

and others similar, obviously all coming from the same press release.

The only cabal I'm aware of is the plotting kind which I can't make fit here. Any ideas?

Thanks

Kabala/crystal ball

This cabal (or cabala, or kabala, or kabbala, sometimes with a final "h") is a body of traditional Jewish lore based on mystical interpretations of Scripture. There are plenty of web sites that you can google for explanations.

If you want to get the underlying notion, which is divining the future, across in English, you could use an expression like "crystal ball", unless of course the context requires a specifically Jewish reference.

In a more specifically Italian context, "cabala" refers to the Neapolitan technique of predicting lottery numbers from significant events. It is used in this sense by economic journalists:

Possibile un rally del 4-8% se la cabala del rush finale sarà confermata.

Mai di lunedì. Meglio in gennaio.

In your case, "lo prevede la Cabala" might even be equivalent to "your guess is as good as mine". Unfortunately, it is difficult to know without at least some context.

Or a crystal ball, of course ;-)

I've found the article:

http://investire.aduc.it/allegati/210805-Mediolanum_Affari_e...

It describes market forecasts that use statistical correlations in a manner reminiscent of lottery number prediction by association with events.

In this context, you could perhaps translate "Il futuro dei mercati? Lo prevede la Cabala" as "Playing/Predicting the Market by Numbers".

Are we getting there?
