Russian term

Ничего (in this context)

Russian to English Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
The context relates to the following conversation between two persons about some goals of a religious imperium. Could the meaning of "Ничего" in this context be "it doesn't matter" or something like that?

"Идея империи привлекательна своей стабильностью и обещанием процветания."
-"Но история нас учит, что все империи рано или поздно терпят крах".
-"Ничего, лет восемьсот нам хватит. Потом настанет конец света, и уже будет не до того."

Nah

He's basically dismissing the argument.

Just one option of many, I'm sure.

This true but

The notion of an Imperium is appealing for reasons of stability and the promise of permanence.
Yes, but our history teaches that sooner or later downfall ensues.
This is true but 800 years is sufficient for us; the waning does not start until then.

The statement "the waning does not start" is positive per se. It does not need a positive introduction. A neutral introduction is entirely sufficient.
Peer comment(s):

disagree etheartofbeing : This is a nice translation but "this is true but" is translated as "это правда, но" .. "Ничего" in this context means more encouraging "That's all right" than somewhat contradictory "This is true but" ..

I thoroughly disagree. In context, you have not made your point. The statement "the waning does not start" is positive per se. It does not need a positive introduction. A neutral introduction is entirely sufficient. "That's all right" is infantile -- w
