SPAIN. I know what this says, but not what it means. I suspect it may be one those things that sounds good but doesn't really mean anything.

This post ... appears to be evolving nicely ... :-)

I´m a biologist myself, Lourdes. Anyway: sorry, don´t agree with you.
Lourdes Sanchez Mar 5, 2010:
Evolution merely means a gradual process in which somethings changes. On the other in my experience working along with Anthropologists evolution in anthropological studies is always referred as "anthropological evolution" or "cultural evolution". The first term to connote biological changes through our history and the second for the study of changes at cultural level The term evolutionist refers to somebody who believes in the theory of Evolution as Darwin proposed it or to biologists who study evolution (I am a biologist) and we do so in all living populations.

Andrea Appel Mar 5, 2010:
I disagree with Lourdes Evolution is not only a biological process. Many things evolve. Stories evolve, methods evolve, constructions evolve, societies evolve, it's just a word, and it not only talks about the evolution of the species.

notion of human evolution

I think it means the game can provide children with a concept of evolution in human race over time.
Example sentence:

Watching the Pyramids gave us a notion of human evolution

Note from asker:
I think this is closest to what they must mean, thanks :-)
Peer comment(s):

agree Andrea Appel : Not only children, my friend :)

disagree Lourdes Sanchez : Not at all. Evolution is a biological process.

Human evolution is both biological and cultural, you can`t separate both terms considering we are cultural animals

sense of development

In the link under sapmles of work

This sense of development--even though abandoned by biologists long ago--has been profoundly influential on education, and on conceptions of the child as a learner. Childhood, seen through this sense of development, . .... form the intellectual capacities that gradually elaborate and expand until they achieve their mature forms . Theories of development in education have thus been what are called "hierarchical integrative": that is, each later stage integrates the attainments of the earlier stage(s) in a higher, more sophisticated form.

evolutionary nature / evolutionary aspect

Your sentence should look something like this:

Other studies have been performed on Age of Empires, a game with similar characteristics. The evolutionary nature of this game allows historical processes to be understood.

Your source sentence is long, unwieldy, redundant and borders on the illiterate. I hope the author sees this.

BTW, I have this game and have played it. Basically, you start out with a primitive society and start building mills, factories, refineries, etc. Many hours later, after clicking the crap out of your mouse, you end up with a futuristic society and a sore arm.

It's educational sociology, that's what they do (waffle). I'm going for Mercedes' option as soon as the 24 hr wait is up :-) Thanks for yr input good buddy ;)
