Spanish term

climatófilas

Spanish to English Science Environment & Ecology
This is from an environmental report for a power plant. They're talking about the revegetation of the land after the plant is dismantled in the future, and they're using terminology from a man named Rivas-Martinez, who apparently developed a system for determining how to revegetate land.

I think 'climax vegetation' is basically synonymous with 'natural potential vegetation' or 'natural vegetation', which is what I think is being referred to here.

Climax. (1) The final or stable biotic community in a successional series which is self-perpetuating and in dynamic equilibrium with the physical habitat; (2) the assumed end point in succession, cf. potential natural community.

Range Condition. (a) A generic term relating to present status of a unit of range in terms of specific values or potentials. Specific values or potentials must be stated. (b) Some agencies define range condition as follows: The present state of vegetation of a range site in relation to the climax (natural potential) plant community for that site. It is an expression of the relative degree to which the kinds, proportions, and amounts of plants in a plant community resemble that of the climax plant community for the site. cf. ecological status and resource value rating.

The sere stopped when an equilibrium between all the factors named above was established. This stage of development is called "climax" by some ecologists and "natural potential" by others. Regardless of its name, the equilibrium stage of primary succession is the highest natural form of development that the environmental factors are capable of producing.

I've just consulted a friend of mine - a Spanish botanist and specialist in this area - he assures me that this term was invented by Salvador Rivas Martínez. Therefore, the translation will have to 'invented' too. In other words, 'climatophilous' is probably fine because the Spanish term is not used by anyone else either (according to my friend and from what I can see on Google). HTH

This term - climatófilo, or in English climatophilous/climatophile - appears to have been coined by Rivas-Martinez, so I think if it's used in English it should used in "~", and defined at the start in brackets or a footnote.
