It's important to fasten onto the title being qualified in this way. The legal defects part means: 'no breach of warranty of title' or 'CLEAR TITLE' i.e. that the seller has authority to sell.

Debts and charges is wider than tax. There may be a hire-purchase register, as in Spain, that showing the owner has entered an outstanding debt against the goods.

Also there may be a gravamen in the form of a previous unpaid seller's lien or what's called an 'extended Romalpa lien' in the UK that follows the ownership of the goods, arguably through into insolvency.
