Spanish term

coronel de marina

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Military / Defense military ranks
I need an equivalent military rank or explanation that could go between parenthesis. It's the rank that used to follow Teniente Coronel in Argentina's Navy.
Proposed translations (English)
5 (Navy) Captain
4 +3 naval captain

Discussion

old rank The text is about Coronel de Marina Leonardo Rosales, who retired in 1830. I think "Coronel de Marina" was a rank at that time. Here's some information about his carreer.

Ascendi 1814 Cabo Artillero / Sargento Artillero
Ascendi 1816 Subteniente de Marina
Ascendi 1818 Teniente de Marina
Baja 1819 A su solicitud
Nueva alta 1820 Subteniente graduado
Baja 1820 Por orden Gobernador SARRATEA
Nueva alta 1821 Subteniente graduado
Ascendi 1821 Teniente efectivo / Capitn graduado.
Ascendi 1826 Capitn efectivo

Jerome Chiecchio Dec 16, 2004:
I think there is an error in your original text. The Argentinean Navy grades are:
La Armada Argentina no tiene grado "coronel de marina"
Los grados son:
Tte de Corbeta
Tte de Fragata
Tte de Navio
Capt de Corbeta
Capt de Fragata
Capt de Navio

Selected

(Navy) Captain

Only to further explain the army/navy ranks equivalence (and provide some references):

Capitán de Corbeta - Mayor de la marina - Lieutenant Commander
Capitán de Fragata - Teniente Coronel de la marina - Commander
Capitán de Navío - Coronel de la marina - Captain

I think I would ommit Navy if the context is obvious. Captain is a well understood rank by itself!

Good luck,
Rossana

The rank just below admiral.

This is in the USN. It is is the equivalent of colonel. Lt. commander would be = to Lt.Colonel.

It would be the same in the Royal Navy as in the USN
Peer comment(s):

agree teju : I know for sure this is the right answer! A colonel in the army is the same thing as a navy captain

thx, Ltemes
agree Rossana Triaca : I agree with Captain but, hey, between an Admiral and a Captain there is at least a Vice-Admiral and maybe two Rear Admirals!! :) (Vicealmirante, Contraalmirate etc.! )

thx. yes, you are right, but in general they are all referred to as admirals
