OK, so back with another round of queries... From a novel called 'Por la patria' by Diamela Eltit. Full text is here: http://ww2.educarchile.cl/UserFiles/P0001/File/articles-6661... passage found on pages 206-7.

Context: A woman is being interrogated by a soldier, she lies to him intentionally to protect herself and act innocent, he gets drunk and then (not so obvious, but suspected) she and other women are raped.
Full sentence:
"Paciente, entrenado, continúa el informe delativo, aumentado por la extrema situación: que nosotros ahora, que las chicas también y el bar, el reservado completo como arsenal.
–¿Cómo arenal? le digo de adrede.
–Como arsenal, me corrige." (206)

More word play here. This is the protagonist pretending not to understand what her interrogator is saying. I want two words that sound very similar and carry similar meanings.

My attempt so far has been:
"Platoon/cartoon
Platoon/sand dune
Platoon/bassoon
Barracks/parish"
Proposed translations (English)
1 storehouse/whorehouse

Yes I did post the same queries to wordreference, I've found the two sites have very different sets of translators and I like to get a large number of opinions before I reach my final solution.

Thanks, Kathryn Asker: please tell us if you post the same question in two places. We're wasting our time if the question's already been answered.

I think you have a good translation with platoon/sand dune.

As an aside, I've followed your questions on Proz and parallel ones on Word Reference with mild interest. It seems you've received an outpouring of very generous and painstaking help on WR, and I'm not sure how much any of us here can improve on that. I have to agree with jasminasul's last comment to you on the WR thread for this question.

Phil, it's all been hashed out here: https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/arsenal-arenal.33237...
philgoddard May 17, 2017:
Can someone explain "el reservado completo como arsenal"?

storehouse/whorehouse

Just guessing, but if it is during the dictatorship, the soldiers could well be accusing the women in what appears to be a brothel of storing weapons.
Something went wrong...
