Hello,
I'm working on a Russian mobile phone text input system and I have a question about е vs. ё. I understand that most Russians type 'е' most of the time, even for words that are spelled with 'ё' in dictionaries. My question is this: would Russian users prefer a system that automatically inserts 'ё' in the correct place for words like "её", (e.g. if the user enters "ее"), or would people prefer the phone to just display 'е' in all cases?

IMHO, in mobile phone system, use of Ё is surplus. Usually, the text is almost readable with Е only.

If possible, options with both е and ё should be stored in the memory. There are words, where ё is indispensable, e.g. всё as apposite to все, поем - поём, some proper names etc. I would feel like the phone lacks an important feature, if I would want to type ё and would fail to do it.

I would say just keep both options. No need to either automatically replace e for ё or eliminate ё at all.
We have not been "overusing" ё lately, but sometimes, as it has been pointed out, one has to make a distinction between e and ё, so I would prefer having them both at hand.

I have to say, I find texting in Russian a nightmare. In English, we have "txtspk" to accelerate the process -i.e., people use abbreviations, numbers to represent sounds, etc. Is there an equivalent in Russian?

Richard, talking about automatic substitution, the answer is "NOOOOOO!". Seriously and honestly, please, don't do that! Especially on a mobile phone. Let the user choose the letter, if it's possible. If not, keep е, skip ё.
If you're lucky to have a touchscreen, look at the iPhone — a perfect example of how a text input should work on a touchscreen. There IS ё there, but it's right where it should be on a mobile phone: hidden under е.

In Russian, there are dozens of abbreviations etc. But this is far from the discussed subject

I definitely prefer to have “ё”, but most users don’t care. The best way would be to have both variants.

i used to have a nokia w/o ё in the Cyrilic keypad - boy, was I frustrated!
