How do I create an unclean .rtf or .doc file (one that will have the source language hidden within the document) using SDLX 2007 (SDL edit)?

For example, the original file is a Word .doc that is brought into SDLX using the Wizard to create the .itd file. The file is translated in SDL edit. It is obvious and clear how to create the clean version of the translation (FILE-> CREATE TRANSLATION) but very unclear how to create the unclean file.

I am familiar with Wordfast where this functionality is built-in.

Version: SDL Trados Freelance 2007 (SP 1)

To create uncleanead files with SDLX - you need Trados.

SDLX 2007 is part of Trados Dec 17, 2007

And if you wants to translate like Wordfast, you have to translate with Trados, not SDLX.

You need to pre-translate the file with Trados Dec 17, 2007

Hi Dannah,

If you want to create an unclean file with SDLX, you also have to feed an unclean file into SDLX before you start translating.

You need to segment the file with the Translate function of Trados and then import it into SDLX. You can then translate it with SDLX and export it back to a segmented unclean file.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Claudia

What is the purpose of the unclean Word file? Dec 17, 2007

Hi Dannah,

If you tell us what you want to achieve with the resulting Word file, I might be able to provide you with the appropriate CAT juggling techniques.

Regards,
Gerard

More details about unclean file Dec 17, 2007

Gerard,

The source is a PDF with extractable text and the client desires an unclean DOC file. The client likes to have unclean files for review/editing/proofing.

I have been using Wordfast for a long time and have continually delivered these types of unclean files. Now I am migrating more to SLDX (I do not like some of Wordfast's features). So now the client expects the same final product as they received before.

After reading Claudia's message, I wonder if I can open and segment the source with Wordfast and then import the segmented file into SDLX. Will this work?

Claudia,

Can you provide further details? This sounds very helpful. I would rather stay fully in the TRADOS/SDLX environment if possible. Since I am not the most familiar with the TRADOS portion of SDLX TRADOS, specific names for programs and menu action, etc would assist me greatly.

Thanks everyone for you assistance so far.

I abandon Dec 18, 2007

If you truly want to stay within the TRADOS/SDLX environment, it's up to the TRADOS/SDLX soldiers. I'd be surprised if they'd come up with a practical workflow.

Gerard

Copy to Word Dec 18, 2007

You can of course convert the itd-file to ttx (Exchange) and open it in TE. But then you must copy the content of the window into Word. Or you remove the ttx-ending of the filename and open it in Word. See how it looks.
Or you could copy the source and target into a two-column table, haven't tried that.

Or you convert the TM into a txt-file. Depends what the customer wants the "uncleaned" file for.
Cheers
Heinrich

No experience with Wordfast Dec 18, 2007

Hi Dannah,

I'm afraid I don't have any experience with Wordfast and can't really tell you whether it's possible to pre-translate the files in Wordfast rather than in Trados.

Anyway, I can understand that you try to avoid Trados like the plague (I also prefer SDLX by far) but the approach I suggested really takes just a couple of clicks in the Workbench and it seems to be the most straightforward solution for your problem.

Hi Dannah,

Anyway, I can understand that you try to avoid Trados like the plague (I also prefer SDLX by far) but the approach I suggested really takes just a couple of clicks in the Workbench and it seems to be the most straightforward solution for your problem.

To do what I suggested, open Translator's Workbench. Select a TM. - Normally it's best to use an empty TM to pre-translate files, otherwise you might run into problems with format painting in SDLX. To create a new TM, click File > New, select the correct languages for you TM, click Create and enter a name for the TM. You only have to do this once and can use this TM for all further jobs.

To pre-translate the file click Tools > Translate, then click on Add and select the file(s) that you want to pre-translate. It's important that you check the Segment unknown sentences box on the right of the dialog. Click Translate and the file(s) will be pre-translated. You can then import the file(s) into SDLX and translate them as usual.

HTH

Claudia

It's not possible to create bilingual (unclean) file from regular .itd file (regular means created from source .doc file).
You have to pretranslate the source .doc file using Workbench/Wordfast/any other Word&Trados-compatible tool (Segment Unknown Sentences has to be switched on) and then convert it to .itd file. SDLX will recognize Trados segments and when you translate and produce final .doc file, it will be bilingual (your translation will go into "target" part of Trados segments).

Thanks Dec 18, 2007

Claudia,

Danke

Your directions made this process very clear. Now one last question for completeness.

Can I also clean (remove the hidden text) this file somehow in the Trados environment?

I already tested it with Wordfast and I do know that I can clean it there.

Thanks again

Dannah
