English to Spanish: The Limits of Violence / Los Límites de la Violencia General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Source text - English Introduction - Pargraph #12
I prefer to call America “the land of contradictions.” Americans are taught from a very young age to revere their first president, George Washington, the “father of his country.” Though they know he was a revolutionary leader, the general of a revolutionary army, they sanitize this in their minds. They do not think of him as a bloody revolutionary. They see him sitting on a horse, or freezing at Valley Forge or crossing the Delaware river in a boat. They don’t see him leading his men into battle against the government they have forcibly rejected, muskets blazing, holes being torn in men’s chests. Yet their country was born in just such a revolutionary war.
English to Spanish: The Courageous Follower / El subordinado valiente General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Source text - English At the same time, the bias toward achieving memorable legacies can blind leaders to potentially catastrophic risk. The odds of the downside risk materializing are often small. The magnitude of the upside potential is alluring. In business, this tendency is magnified by the personal finan¬cial rewards associated with success. In these situations, even a clear demonstration of the potential for catastrophic risk may fail to move sen¬ior leaders. The line between courageous risk taker and compulsive gam¬bler can blur. This is especially problematic if the risk the leader is taking comes on the heels of a string of successes: the gambler feels charmed, and those like the board, with authority to rein in the risk, are silenced by fear of jeopardizing the winning streak. At this point the stars are aligned for potential catastrophe
English to Spanish: Today I Woke Up In Infinity / Despertar en el océano General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Today I woke up in infinity
without North or South, nothing to the East
neither horizon to the West.
Above a light blue sky and
beneath that chilling dark abyss
inviting to an everlasting sleep.
I believe it’s the ocean,
I don’t know which, one of many.
I gently flap my arms and
slowly move my limbs.
The head above the water surface
making an effort to breathe.
The waves come back and forth
with no certain direction, just come and go.
Raise my body for just a moment.
I search for a horizon. There is none.
Then I sink into a deep valley
with giant and menacing slopes.
I feel afraid, my heart beats hard.
The muscles tremble, the throat gets close.
The sky darkens and the abyss opens.
I want to go back to my dream but I ought not.
I know it is a trap without escape.
I must keep awake and float.
I try to calm down my spirit.
If I give up to Sirens I shall die.
If I try to swim I will suffer cramps.
If I cry my eyes will go blind.
If I desperately yell no one will hear me.
If I surrender to death no one will mourn for me.
Is it now when God shows up?
Where are Thou? I want to see You!
Extend your arm to me! Please.
Before the sun gets hidden
and the night brings its darkness.
Give me just one more chance!!
Nothing happens…
Is it that I am not awake?
Is this a nightmare with an end?
Or is it the cruel reality I have built?
Where am I? Where am I going? I am ignorant.
I only know that I must live one year more.
Debo seguir despierto y flotar.
Busco calmar mi espíritu.
Si cedo a las Sirenas moriré.
Si intento nadar me acalambraré.
Si lloro mis ojos se enceguecerán.
Si grito desesperadamente nadie me oirá.
Si me abandono a la muerte nadie me llorará.
¿Será ahora cuando aparece Dios?
¿Dónde estás? ¡Quiero verte!
¡Tiéndeme tu mano! Por favor.
Antes de que se esconda el sol
y la noche me cubra de oscuridad.
¡Otórgame una oportunidad más!
Nada sucede…
¿Será que no estoy despierto?
¿Será esto una pesadilla con final?
¿O es la realidad atroz que construí?
¿Dónde estoy? ¿Hacia dónde voy?
No sé.
