Source text - Japanese 九州を代表する銘酒・美少年は、地元の原材料にこだわって作った純米吟醸酒です。蔵のある熊本県菊池市 の素材を厳選し、酒米は地元農家が丁寧に育てたものを、仕込み水は日本名水百選にも選ばれた菊池渓谷 からひいた水を使いました。そしてお酒を仕込む杜氏も菊池市出身。 とことんオール菊池にこだわったこのお酒は、低温発酵で丁寧に醸し出し、毎日飲んでも飽きのこない仕上がりです。その自信作を彩るラベルは、漫画界の巨匠・松本零士 氏監修による作品です。漫画の中で美少年というお酒を登場させたことがあり、蔵元とはそれ以来の付き合い。今回コラボレーションが実現したことにより、このお酒は松本氏のペンネームを一字もらい、「零」と名付けられました。
Translation - English One of Kyushu’s most celebrated sakes, Bishonen (“Beautiful Boy”) Rei is a junmai-ginjo-shu sake created from the very finest local ingredients. This sake is created from carefully-selected ingredients sourced from the city of Kikuchi in Kumamoto prefecture, a city known for its many warehouses ; rice painstakingly cultivated by local farmers is used, brewed with water drawn from the Kikuchi Valley, selected as one of Japan’s top 100 water sources. Mr. Mori, who brews the sake, also originates from the city of Kikuchi. This sake, which prides itself on being a “100% Kikuchi” product through and through, is crafted through a painstaking low-temperature brewing process, resulting in a finished sake with a taste that never palls, no matter how many times it is drunk. The label on these bottles, designed to showcase the pride that this company has in its production methods, was created by artist Leiji Matsumoto who is a star of the manga world. This collaborative venture between Leiji Matsumoto and the brewery developed after Bishonen sakes first appeared in a manga. Based on this concept, this sake has been awarded the name of “Rei,” borrowing a syllable from “Leiji” (or “Reiji”), Mr. Matsumoto’s penname.

Translation - English At JGZ, which started full-fledged operations in September 2009, the decision has been made to start the production of auxiliary transmission-equipped CVTs for the latest FF compact vehicles and minivehicles from April 2001, in addition to belt CVTs which the company currently produces for mid-sized FF vehicles. This will increase JGZ’s production capacity from 380,000 units/year (as of April 2011) to 730,000 units/year by the spring of 2012, with the aim of responding to the further growth in demand which is forecast in the Chinese market. In addition to increasing assembly capacity, JGZ will also bolster its machining processes and add heat treatment processes to its production, aiming to promote a shift towards greater localization while also developing a structure capable of responding swiftly to needs such as quality-related issues in the market, vehicle application development and the domestic production of components.

Translation - English In order to reveal the correspondence relationship between the raw water quality (RWQ) level and the water treatment methods adopted in Japan, we compared the raw water quality of water in terms of the main items for water quality using a histogram, according to three sets of standards—“disinfection only,” “regular water treatment” and “advanced water treatment”—based on waterworks statistical data. In addition, in order to gauge the RWQ level for each type of advanced water treatment, we also compared the three methods of powdered activated carbon, granular activated carbon and ozone granular activated carbon among the water treatment plants which are undertaking advanced water treatment. As an example, we have shown the results for geosmin in Figures 1 and 2. Figure 1 shows a tendency for geosmin to be higher in the advanced water treatment group. In Figure 2, rising concentration is distributed in the following order: powdered activated carbon < granular activated carbon < ozone granular activated carbon. As the removal effect from ozone is particularly great, the higher the concentration level of geosmin in the raw water used by water treatment plants, the higher the percentage of plants introducing ozone treatment.

Translation - English The silver-lipped pearl oyster shell, which is the largest of all pearl oysters, is known in English-speaking countries as “mother of pearl” due to its deep luster and smooth, elegant quality. It has been used since ancient times as a precious stone in high-quality clock dials and cutlery handles. Bisai Accessories are jewelry pieces created by incorporating this shell into a technique known as maki-e, a form of traditional Japanese lacquerware with a history stretching back more than 400 years. Maki-e is one of several techniques which have been developed to a high level as part of the Yamanaka school of lacquerware. In maki-e, pictures and patterns are painted on the surface of an object with lacquer; then, while the lacquer is still wet, it is sprinkled with gold dust, causing a layer of gold to adhere to the surface. This technique has been used to create eight designs incorporating the silver-lipped pearl oyster shell, featuring a seven-spot ladybird, Mt. Fuji, the four seasons of Japan and other motifs.

Translation - English Tsukudani is a type of of simmered seaweed dish created from local ingredients by the Fisheries Cooperative of Iheya Island, located to the north of Okinawa Main Island. Okinawa mozuku is a type of mozuku seaweed that is unique to Okinawa and the other Ryukyu Islands; characterized by a crisper consistency than the ito mozuku which is harvested on the mainland, Okinawa mozuku is considered one of Okinawa prefecture’s local specialties. Aosa or aasa (sea lettuce) is a green-colored seaweed which grows around the rocks surrounding Okinawa; in appearance and fragrance, it is similar to aonori (green laver) seaweed. Both Okinawa mozuku and aosa are full of nutritional value, and have recently drawn much attention for their role as health foods. Both essential components of Okinawa cuisine, these seaweeds have been seasoned with grouper and tuna caught in Okinawa and simmered with brown sugar, vinegar and ginger to create this dish, known as tsukudani. The perfect accompaniment to meals, this superb product is a chance to taste the natural environment and food culture of Okinawa.

日本でアルマプロジェクトが立ち上がった時に、情報通信研究機構というところで将来の情報通信を見据えて、まだ使ってないようなテラヘルツ帯の周波数帯を有効利用するということで、研究開発を進めていて、アルマバンド10という周波数帯が、我々がやっていた研究と同じような周波数帯だったので、プロジェクトに参加しました。
Translation - English Q1: What initially led to you become involved with ALMA?
Back when work on the ALMA telescope project was starting to get underway in Japan, I was at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), working on research and development aiming to make making effective use of the terahertz frequency range—something that was apparently not yet being used at this time—in anticipation of future information communications. The frequency range that we were conducting our research on was the same as the ALMA Band 10 frequency range, which is why we got involved in the ALMA project.
Q2: What is the hardest aspect of capturing electromagnetic waves that come to the Earth from space?
Electromagnetic waves that come in from outer space are extremely weak, and much of these are absorbed by moisture in the earth’s atmosphere as they pass through. As they have such difficulty reaching the earth, they require highly sensitive receiver technology.
Q3: Can you tell us about the key points that have made it possible to receive electromagnetic waves that had been impossible to observe up until now?
Superconducting devices have been crucial in enabling us to receive electromagnetic waves from space for the first time. An element called niobium has been used up until now for creating such superconducting devices. However, niobium will not function in the 10 terahertz frequency band, so we created this superconducting device using niobium titanium nitride, a new superconducting material. This is a new material, so we had to carry out tests hundreds of times before we were eventually able to create the device. The device itself is tiny, measuring a mere 1.2mm in length from end to end, and can be placed in the palm of your hand; it has come about as a result of amassing all kinds of different research.

I have lived in Japan for more than 17 years, and have spent most of that time working and studying in business environments, using Japanese constantly.
I am accustomed to working under high pressure and to tight deadlines, with the customer’s needs and preferences taking priority, and to producing “client-ready” documents (thoroughly researched, checked, edited and proofread). Due to ample experience as an in-house translator when I was frequently responsible for coordinating large-scale projects and working with freelance translators, I am acutely aware of what makes a freelance translator easy or difficult to work with, and I always take care to work in a manner which minimizes work for project coordinators.
