My Background:
I was born in the multi-ethnic region of Transylvania and got used to different languages and cultures from an early age. This area is a melting-pot following its history of shifting borders and rulers. You can easily spot the Romanian, Hungarian and German heritage in the form of different folk costumes, architecture, cuisine, music and festivals. Most of the city-names are in Romanian, German as well as in Hungarian. You can find Hungarian and German schools, theaters and cultural institutions throughout the region. Living side by side with native Hungarian, Romanian and German speakers sparked my interest specializing my career in languages and I quickly got used to switching between different languages when speaking with family and friends.
A mosaic of languages
I think its remarkable how families continue to protect and care for their languages, regardless of which nation being in charge of their land. The inhabitants of Transylvania are proud of their heritage in this beautiful region with shifting landscapes of mountains, meadows, rivers and woods. Interesting enough, some words have melted together up through the centuries. Like the word for greeting: "Servus", which can be found in Romanian, Hungarian as well as in German. In such a melting pot of a region it's quite convenient with at least one word that can be understood in 3 different languages!
University and Work
After attending West University of Timisoara earning a BA in linguistics, I worked as a Project Manager for two international companies managing UK and German clients. I find it fascinating to see the amount of new words coming from the online world, and my background from the e-commerce business has proved to be very valuable in my translation work. Following my relocation from Timisoara to London my English vocabulary is continuing to grow, and I am gradually starting to build up a strong portfolio of UK clients.
