Some companies have experienced real success by winning both the parents and kids. The recent successes of the Imac launch and the VW Beetle relaunch demonstrate the power of appealing across generations.
The new Beetle’s launch advertising used overt link to the brand memories and attachments of a previous generation while it was attracting a new, younger clientele. The car is loved and driven by the boomers and generations X and the older Ys. The future strength of the brand was apparent in the wide-ranging success of the new Beetle.
A new generation will now grow up with the Beetle and it will form their opinions and preferences for the Volkswagen brand. VW states that overall Volkswagen sales lifted with the relaunch of the Beetle, an effect they believe comes from attributing the positive values of one car across their whole line. How many kids will now drive Beetles of Jettas or Passats when they are ready to own their own cars due to the nostalgia felt for the Bug?
