Source text - English The Panamerican Health Organization describes the social aspects and political responses that contraceptive emergency methods have found in three main objectives: 7
- The use of EC constitutes an abortion
- The use of EC promotes “promiscuous behavior” (increase in sexual activity).
- The EC will cause that men and women abandon other contraceptive methods.
The main components of the first objection are mainly the Catholic Church, and also the conservative political parties. The doctrine of the Catholic Church determines that a pregnancy starts with the ovule fertilization; medically the pregnancy is considered when the fertilized ovule is implanted on the uterus, due to the fact that it can only be developed there in order to form the fetus. The EC cannot end a pregnancy once it has started, so it is not an abortive method, although it is commonly confused with an “abortive pill”. 7
The emergency methods are not as prevalent in the American Continent as to obtain enough data to support the second and third objections. However, in European studies, neither the emergency contraceptives, nor any other contraceptive method have statistically demonstrated to increase the sexual activity among female users. 7
The main response to these objections must be based on the adequate communication given to the emergency methods’ users. They should have very clear that it is a method to be used only when no other contraceptive method has been used.
Mexican Market Aspects
The total contraceptive market in Mexico is of $ 2,113 Mio MXP (MAT Jul 09), with a growth of 8.4% in assets and 3.3% in units.8

- La AE hará que hombres y mujeres abandonen otros métodos anticonceptivos.
Los principales componentes de la primera objeción son es la iglesia católica principalmente, al igual que partidos conservadores. La doctrina de la iglesia católica determina que un embarazo inicia con la fertilización del óvulo, médicamente el embarazo se considera cuando el óvulo fertilizado se implanta en el útero, dado que solo ahí puede desarrollarse para formar al feto. La AE no puede terminar un embarazo una vez que ha iniciado, por lo que no es un abortivo, aunque comúnmente se le confunde como “píldora abortiva”. 7
Los métodos de emergencia no son tan prevalentes en el continente americano como para obtener datos suficientes que soporten la segunda y tercera objeciones. Sin embargo, en estudio europeos, ni los anticonceptivos de emergencia, o cualquier otro método anticonceptivo ha demostrado estadísticamente que aumente la actividad sexual entre usuarias.7
La principal respuesta a estas objeciones se debe basar en la adecuada comunicación que se entrega a las usuarias de los métodos de emergencia, al cual debe especificar claramente que es un método para usar únicamente cuando no se utilizó otro método anticonceptivo.
