English to French: Effects of Oil Spills on Mangrove Ecosystems in Australia
Source text - English Effects of Oil Spills on Mangrove Ecosystems in Australia
Oil is occasionally spilled into the sea and coastal waters in huge volumes as a result of accidents, during regular operations of the petroleum and shipping transport industries.
If this oil is washed ashore, it can cause significant damage to coastal marine ecosystems, particularly those between the high water and low water marks.
In Australia, the mangroves that dominate these shorelines are extremely vulnerable to oil spills, since the oil is deposited on above-ground breathing roots, subsurface feeding roots, and a myriad of fauna that live between the roots.
Oiling of tree roots and sea-bed may result in tree death within days, but oil deposits also cause depressed growth of surviving trees, as well as affecting new seedlings. In the longer term, this involves subtle effects on both mature trees and seedlings. These subtle impacts may persist for decades and be manifested in reduced growth of foliage (by 20-30%), but the effects on forest function and sustainability in the very long term are largely unknown.
The project that is the subject of this report addressed theses issues by assessing long term impacts on mangroves of oils used in Australian waters. To assess these long term effects, we surveyed major spill sites around Australia where oil had affected mangrove habitats over the last 30 years. We recorded nine notable incidents from these surveys: six were related to shipping activities, while three were essentially land-based, and none were related to offshore operations.
Translation - French Conséquences des Marées Noires sur les Ecosystèmes Palétuviers en Australie

Bio
Since my birth in India (Bangalore), I had the opportunity to live ten years in Brazil (and talk fluently Portuguese), learn English & Spanish while living in France as well as travelling frequently in Europe, and live five years in Australia where I'm currently getting settled.
Presently preparing an accreditation to become a professional translator (English into French) in Australia I'm as well committed to writing a Master's thesis which subject field relates to country risk analysis and more specifically to political risk analysis.
My primary intention is to obtain this professional translator accreditation which purpose would be to eventually hold a position within an international structure including not for profit, non & governmental organisations where French or/as well as English would be the official language(s). My secondary aim would consist in preparing a new certification in the second direction, say, from French into English and then work towards the goal of being accredited from Spanish into French. Needless to say that this initiative would be taken once the initial objective is achieved.
The combination of the translator's occupation with a level of expertise in the field of political risk analysis would in the long run shape the competences I would like to be able to suggest to whether the aforementioned organisations whether to private entities in the need for intelligence inherent to sustainable development strategies.
