Spanish to English: Biodiversity (extract) General field: Science Detailed field: Environment & Ecology
Translation - English In the broad sense, the concept of biodiversity refers to the variety of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genes, including their different functional processes. Therefore the study, maintenance and conservation of biodiversity requires effort at each of these four levels. While the first level focuses on the conservation of landscapes as a whole, the second concentrates on the protection of specific habitats. In terms of species, most existing knowledge is related to flowering plants and vertebrates. Thus an inventory of a large number of non-flowering plants and smaller animals - especially marine species and invertebrates, plus algae, bacteria and viruses - is still pending, together with the implementation of measures for their protection. While wild plants and animals constitute the greater part of biological diversity, an important subgroup affects the diversity of domesticated organisms. At this fourth level, interest is focused on genetic diversity, that is the preservation of variety in crops and in farm animals.
French to English: Teaching ideas for secondary students (extract) General field: Other Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy

Translation - English Secondary level
• One game consists in travelling through the different countries within the Union, and changing a sum of money in each country visited into the local currency, in order to demonstrate that at the end of the journey the initial sum has been reduced. This is obviously a very classical example, but the fact that it is presented as a game in which the pupils participate makes it very different from a straightforward oral presentation. The game is based on ideas that are very simple for teachers, but which the pupils only grasp through action - learning by doing.
• Another game could consist in buying the same object in two countries, and noting the distortions produced by the currency exchange. This immediately allows an introduction of the advantages attached to the euro. Taking this as a starting point, the purely monetary aspects of the question can obviously be developed, by analysing the reason for the differences in exchange.
This session of drawing together the ideas contributed by different groups additionally permitted the quick presentation of a game used in Aragón. It works on the same principle as snakes and ladders. Pupils move around the board, and in some squares there are questions to be answered about the European Union.
