Source text - English All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Nessuno si preoccuperebbe di ciò, forse, se almeno questo desse vita a qualcosa d’importante. Se tutta questa costante attività e i click producessero, alla fine, ciò che non esisteva prima, immagini di una bellezza catturata o di una verità svelata. Ma, tristemente, non è così. La macchina fotografica non è altro che un graffiti reso rispettabile.
La macchina fotografica è il mezzo con cui noi imprimiamo noi stessi su ogni cosa che vediamo, con la scusa di catalogare le meraviglie del mondo già meravigliosamente immortalate e in vendita in ogni cartoleria o edicola. Ma a che serve, una volta tornati a casa, mostrare a zia Maude cartoline dei paesaggi toscani, se non ci sono foto che testimoniano che io lì ci sono stato davvero?
Nessuna distesa di sassi è di per sè reale a meno che io non sia là . Nessun monumento esiste se non per mia moglie, che ci si appoggia vicino. Nessun tempio è interessante senza la mia faccia sorridente vicino. Con la mia macchina fotografica mi approprio di qualsiasi cosa splendida, la posseggo,la rimpicciolisco, l’addomestico e la riproduco sul muro vuoto del mio soggiorno per provare ad un pubblico selezionato di amici e familiari l’unico fatto assolutamente vitale riguardo a queste bellezze: le ho viste, io ero là, le ho fotografate e quindi esistono.

Source text - German Für Kühe gibt es traditionell nun Statisten-Rollen in Western und Heimat-filmen. Einzige Ausnahme ist die alte französische Kniegskomödie, »La vache et le prisonnier«, mit Fernandel und den Kuh Margueritte, die dem französischen Komiker mehrfach das Leben rettet. Diese Vernachlässigung der Kuh sollte sich erst ändern, als 1972 pfiffige Werbeleute auf die Idee kamen, ein besonders prächtiges Exemplar lila einzufärben.
Die Preise, die die Ikone der deutschen Werbung inzwischen einheimste, die Zeitungsseiten, die sie füllte, sind wohl nicht mehr zu zählen. Selbstverständlich gab es Gold vom Art-Directors-Club, einer Art deutschen Meisterschaft den Werbung. 1980 schlug Kreativ-Guru Michael Schirnen den lila Milchspender allen Ernstes für den Literatur-Nobelpreis vor. Im stets adretten Lila-Look gilt sie längst als eine Art Schweizer Bundeskuh; Stadtkindern glauben, daß Kälber lila-farben zur Welt kommen. Bei einer Malaktion in Bayern färbte jedes dritte Kind die Vollmilch-Lieferanten ****-gerecht ein. Die Frankfurter Rundschau knittelte daraufhin auf der Titelseite: »Lilalu, lila ist die Kuh.«

Stress is among the vaguest but most insidious of aliments,and the mechanism of its action in the body has remained a mystery. Psychological stress has been shown to lead to poor health and a depressed immune system, but how? And why people experiencing high levels of stress appear so haggard and aged? Elissa Epel, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, and her colleagues think they know the answer. And it is surprisingly obvious: stress appears to age you because it really does age you.
Body cells have age limits. They have caps called telomeres on the ends of their chromosomes, and these caps shorten after each cell division. Eventually, the telomeres become too short for division to occur again. When this happens the cell dies. This " limit to life" was first discovered in the 1960s by Leonard Hayflick, at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, and it has become known as the Hayflick limit.

Alla fine, i telomeri diventano troppo ridotti per poter permettere altre divisioni. Quando ciò avviene la cellula muore.
