Source text - Afrikaans Die groot geskenk
Translation - English English translation by Joan du Plessis:
The big present
On neither of the two planets that I currently inhabit have I found anyone who can get more excited about a wrapped article than me. An unexpected item of clothing in unusual packaging, a home-made edible treat in brown paper, a kitchen cloth over a full basket, anything that waits to be opened, gives me more pleasure than most people can even dream of. And not only to receive, but to plan, to hunt down, to embellish and to deliver.
Some people ride horses, others climb mountains, yet others travel in caravans, I buy presents. Half of my time on earth is spent in searches through shops, night sessions on the internet and marauding sessions at paper sellers. While the rest of the creation’s male population mow the lawn, snore in front of the television, shout from pavilion or toil in offices, I am busy, as one possessed, shoving surprises into boxes, steaming bows, and glueing cards.
I am a skilled writer and editor of business documents. I earned the MPhil (cum laude), Document Analysis and Design, from Stellenbosch University: one of the modules was Advanced Translation Theory. Have been working as a document writer since October 2003.
