Source text - English We are pleased to submit a proposal to you for a XXXX foam apparatus per your request for quotation. Loose equipment will be provided only as stated in the following pages.
XXXX was incorporated in XXX. Since then we have been building bodies with one philosophy, "BUILD THE FINEST". Our skilled craftsmen take pride in their work, which is reflected, in the final product. We have been building fire apparatus since the early "forties" giving XXXXX over XXX years of experience in the fire apparatus market. Our plant is located in XXXXX with over XXXXX total square feet of floor space situated on approximately XX acres of land. A multi-million dollar inventory of parts is available to keep your unit in service long after it has left the factory.
QUALITY AND WORKMANSHIP
XXXXX has set the pace for quality and workmanship in the fire apparatus field. Our tradition of building the highest quality units with craftsmen second to none has been the rule right from the beginning. We currently have a "Quality Achievement Supplier" program to insure the vendors and suppliers that we utilize meet the high standards that we demand. That is just part of our overall "Quality at the Source" program at Pierce. Another part of this program is employing experts in their fields, like a Certified American Welding Society Inspector to monitor our weld quality.
INFORMATION
At time of delivery, complete operation and maintenance manuals covering the apparatus will be provided. A permanent plate will be mounted in the driver's compartment specifying the quantity and type of fluids required including engine oil, engine coolant, transmission, pump transmission lubrication, pump primer and drive axle.
PERFORMANCE TESTS
A road test will be conducted with the apparatus fully loaded and a continuous run of no less than ten (10) miles. During that time the apparatus will show no loss of power nor will it overheat. The transmission drive shaft or shafts and the axles will run quietly and be free of abnormal vibration or noise. The apparatus will meet NFPA 1901 acceleration requirements and NFPA 1901 braking requirements. The apparatus when fully loaded will not have less than 25% nor more than 50% on the front axle and not less than 50% nor more than 75% on the rear axle.
ISO COMPLIANCE
XXXXX operates a Quality Management System under the requirements of ISO 9001. These standards sponsored by the "International Organization for Standardization (ISO)" specify the quality systems that are established by the manufacturer for design, manufacture, installation and service. A copy of the certificate of compliance Number XXXX is included with this proposal.
NFPA 2004 STANDARDS
This unit will comply with the NFPA standards effective January of 2004.
Certification of slip resistance of all stepping, standing and walking surfaces will be supplied with delivery of the apparatus.
A plate that is highly visible to the driver while seated will be provided. This plate will show the overall height, length, and gross vehicle weight rating.
XXXXX has programs in place for training, proficiency testing and performance for any staff involved with certifications.
XXXX will designate, in writing, who is qualified to witness and certify test results.
NFPA COMPLIANCY
Apparatus proposed by the bidder will meet the applicable requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as stated in current edition at time of contract execution.
TOTAL VEHICLE ASSESSMENT CERTIFICATION
The apparatus will be third-party, independent, audit-certified to the current edition of NFPA 1901 standards. The certification includes: all design, production, operational and performance testing of the apparatus.
PUMP TEST
The pump will be tested, approved, and certified at the manufacturer's expense. The test results and the pump manufacturer's certification of hydrostatic test; the engine manufacturer's certified brake horse power curve; and the manufacturer's record of pump construction details will be forwarded to the Fire Department.
GENERATOR TEST
If the unit has a generator, the generator will be tested, approved, and certified at the manufacturer's expense. The test results will be provided to the Fire Department at the time of delivery.
BREATHING AIR TEST
If the unit has breathing air, Underwriters Laboratories will draw an air sample from the air system and certify that the air quality meets the requirements of NFPA 1989, Standard on Breathing Air Quality for Fire and Emergency Services Respiratory Protection.
APPROVAL DRAWING
A drawing of the proposed apparatus will be prepared and provided to the purchaser for approval before construction begins. The Pierce sales representative will also be provided with a copy of the same drawing. The finalized and approved drawing will become part of the contract documents. This drawing will indicate the chassis make and model, location of the lights, siren, horns, compartments, major components, etc.
A "revised" approval drawing of the apparatus will be prepared and submitted by Pierce to the purchaser showing any changes made to the approval drawing.
WARRANTY
We warranty each piece of new fire or rescue apparatus to be free from defects in materials or workmanship under normal use and service. Our obligation under this warranty is limited to repairing or replacing, as the company may elect, any parts thereof which are returned to us with transportation costs prepaid, and as to which examination is disclose to the company's satisfaction to have been defective, provided such part, or parts will be returned to us not later than one (1) year for delivery of the apparatus. Such defective part or parts will be repaired or replaced free of charge and without charge for installation to the original purchaser.
This warranty will not apply to:
1) Normal maintenance and adjustments.
2) Any vehicle which has been repaired or altered outside of our factory in any way so that, in our judgment, to affect the stability, nor which has been subject to misuse, neglect, or accident, nor to any vehicle which will operate at any speed exceeding the factory rated speed, or loaded beyond the factory rated load capacity.
3) Commercial chassis and associated equipment furnished with the chassis, signaling devices, generators, batteries, or other trade accessories in which they are usually warranted separately by their respective manufacturers.
This warranty is in lieu of all other warranties, expressed or implied, all others representations to the original purchaser and all other obligations or liabilities, including liability for incidental or consequential damages on the part of the company. We neither assume nor authorize any other person to give or assume any other warranty or liability on the company's behalf unless made or assumed in writing by the company.
CHASSIS INFORMATION
The chassis will be a XXXX, tandem axle cab over engine chassis. For further information refer to the chassis specifications as provided by XXXX
SEATING CAPACITY
The seating capacity in the cab will be two (2).
WHEELBASE
The wheelbase of the vehicle will be 171.5" with 95" After frame extension.

CALIDAD Y MANO DE OBRA

INFORMACIÓN
En el momento de la entrega, se proporcionarán manuales completos de operación y mantenimiento que cubran el aparato. Una placa permanente estará montada en el compartimiento del conductor especificando la cantidad y tipo de fluidos requeridos, incluyendo el aceite del motor, refrigerante del motor, lubricación de la transmisión, cebador de la bomba y lubricación del tren motriz.
PRUEBAS DE DESEMPEÑO
Se efectuará una prueba de camino con el aparato completamente cargado y una corrida continua de no menos de diez (10 millas. Durante ese tiempo el aparato no mostrará pérdida de potencia ni se sobrecalentará. El eje impulsor o ejes impulsores y los ejes funcionarán silenciosamente y estarán libres de vibración o ruidos anormales. El aparato cumplirá con los requerimientos de aceleración de NFPA 1901 y los requerimientos de frenado de NFPA 1901. El aparato completamente cargado no tendrá menos del 25% ni más del 50% del peso sobre el eje delantero y no menos del 50% ni más del 75% sobre el eje trasero.
CUMPLIMIENTO CON ISO
XXXXX opera un Sistema de Administración de Calidad bajo los requerimientos de ISO 9001. Estos estándares patrocinados por la “Organización Internacional de Estandarización (ISO)” especifican los sistemas de calidad que son establecidos por el fabricante para el diseño, la manufactura, instalación y servicio. Con esta propuesta se incluye una copia del certificado de cumplimiento Número XXXXXX.
ESTÁNDARES NFPA 2004
Esta unidad cumplirá con los estándares de la NFPA en vigor a partir de enero de 2004.
La certificación de la Resistencia Antiderrapante de todas las superficies de pisar, pararse y caminar se suministrará con la entrega del aparato.
Se proporcionará una placa muy fácilmente visible al conductor cuando esté sentado. Esta placa mostrará la altura y longitud totales del vehículo y el peso bruto vehicular.

CUMPLIMIENTO CON NFPA

CERTIFICACIÓN DE LA EVALUACIÓN TOTAL DEL VEHÍCULO
El aparato será auditado-certificado a la edición en vigor de los estándares NFPA 1901 por una tercera parte independiente. La certificación incluye todo el diseño, producción, pruebas operacionales y de desempeño del aparato.
PRUEBA DE LA BOMBA
La bomba se probará, aprobará, y certificará a costo del fabricante. Los resultados de la prueba y la certificación del fabricante de la bomba de prueba hidrostática; la curva de potencia de caballos de fuerza de frenado del fabricante del motor; y los registros del fabricante de la bomba de los detalles de construcción de la bomba se enviarán al Departamento de Bomberos.
PRUEBA DEL GENERADOR
Si la unidad tiene un generador, el generador se probará, aprobara, y certificado a costo del fabricante. Los resultados de la prueba se proporcionarán al Departamento de Bomberos en el momento de la entrega.
PRUEBA DEL AIRE RESPIRABLE
Si la unidad tiene aire respirable, Underwriters Laboratories tomará una muestra de aire del sistema de aire y certificará que la calidad del aire cumple con los requerimientos de NFPA 1989, Standard on Breathing Air Quality for Fire and Emergency Services Respiratory Protection (Estándar de la Calidad del Aire Respirable para la Protección Respiratoria Contra Incendios y Servicios de Emergencia ).
DIBUJO DE APROBACIÓN
Un dibujo del aparato propuesto se preparará y se proporcionará al comprador para su aprobación antes de que comience la construcción. El representante de ventas de Pierce también recibirá una copia del mismo dibujo. El dibujo finalizado y aprobado se convertirá en parte de los documentos contractuales. Este dibujo indicará la marca y modelo del chasis, la ubicación de las luces, sirena, bocinas, compartimientos, componentes principales, etc.

GARANTÍA
Garantizamos que cada pieza de nuevos aparatos contra incendios o de rescate está libre de defectos en materiales o mano de obra bajo el uso y servicio normales. Nuestra obligación bajo esta garantía se limita a la reparación o reemplazo, como elija la compañía, de cualquier parte del mismo que se nos regrese con gastos de transporte prepagados, y que el examen de la misma muestre a satisfacción de la compañía que está defectuosa, siempre y cuando dicha parte o partes se nos regrese no más de un (1) año después de la entrega del aparato. Tal parte o partes defectuosa(s) se repararán o reemplazarán sin cargo y sin cargo de instalación al comprador original.
Esta garantía no se aplicará a:
1) El mantenimiento y los ajustes normales.
2) Cualquier vehículo que haya sido reparado o alterado fuera de nuestra fábrica de cualquier manera que, a nuestro juicio, afecte la estabilidad, o que haya sido sometida al mal uso, descuido, o accidente, ni a cualquier vehículo que opere a velocidades que excedan la velocidad máxima especificada de fábrica, o se haya cargado más allá de la capacidad de carga nominal de fábrica.
3) Los chasises comerciales y el equipo asociado proporcionado con el chasis, dispositivos de señalamiento, generadores, baterías, u otros accesorios de la industria, en cuanto que normalmente están garantizados por sus fabricantes respectivos.
Esta garantía es en lugar de todas las demás garantías, expresas o implícitas, todas las otras representaciones al comprador original y de todas las otras obligaciones o responsabilidades, incluyendo la responsabilidad por daños incidentales o consecuentales por parte de la compañía. Ni aceptamos ni autorizamos a persona alguna a dar o asumir cualquier otra garantía o responsabilidad a nombre de la compañía, a menos que la compañía lo acepte por escrito.

I was born in Mexico City. I consider English my mother tongue, literally. My mother was English and my first words were in this language. However, I am a Mexican so Spanish soon caught up.
My grade school education was at a bilingual school. My first translations were as a teenager helping my parents who occasionally did translations for Selecciones, the Spanish language edition of the Reader´s Digest, especially articles like "I am John's foot", in the medical field. I did the translation first and then my parents corrected it, I suspect very heavily. I studied architecture at the National University (UNAM) but never finished. During this time I taught English at a small language school and this prompted me to study ESOL (English as a Second Language) Teaching.
For some years I worked at the housing institute of the Federal District and later at the National Housing Institute (INDECO).
Eventually I started teaching English at private schools in Tijuana and then my wife and I opened our own English language school, where I taught English to Mexican youngsters and adults and also Spanish to American businessmen. At the same time I took jobs as a freelance translator. I translated manuals of educational materials and equipment for companies such as Aparatos S.A (Mexico)and Edusystems (USA).
After a time we moved the school to Xalapa, in Veracruz state and I continued teaching and translating.
Now our two children are grown-up and have left the nest, so we have closed the language school and moved to the country near Cuautla, in Morelos state, and I translate full time.
Some of my main clients have been sending me work for more than fifteen years. These include Oshkosh Corporation and Pierce Manufacturing. For these companies I have translated a great many technical manuals of fire trucks, ambulances, garbage trucks, concrete mixers, and other kinds of equipment, as well as contracts, bids, technical specifications and other kinds of documents.
I started translating on a typewriter and pasting illustrations on paper, looking up references in hard copy and sending my work by snail mail. The world of translation has changed a great deal since then, but I have always kept up. I consider the fact that we now have so many resources available a challenge to improve the quality of my work.
