Spanish to English: Clinical Research Study - Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) General field: Medical
Translation - English INTRODUCTION
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common but elusive illness that can cause serious problems and even death if not treated adequately. It is estimated to occur in 1% of the population in western countries resulting in millions of deaths every year. Death occurs when venous thrombi break off and form pulmonary emboli obstructing the lung arteries. Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (PE) are complications that affect many hospitalized patients, but can also occur in healthy people. Pulmonary embolism is more frequent in women than in men. The number of subjects that die due to these complications is higher to the number of women who die due to breast cancer. PE is the most frequent cause of death related to childbirth.
DVT is a severe complication in patients subject to orthopedic surgery and in patients with cancer and other chronic diseases. Patients who survive an initial DVT episode are prone to developing chronic leg edema due to lesions occurred to venous valves during the thrombotic process, which produces venous hypertension. In some patients ulcers and the difficulty to move their legs prevent a normal life. Furthermore, recurrence of thrombotic episodes is frequent. When DVT and PE occur as complications of other medical or surgical conditions, besides a greater risk of mortality, hospitalization periods increase and, as a consequence, so do medical expenses.

Translation - English Product Evolution
Faced with a stagnant demand, shampoo manufacturing companies have opted for many years to search for specialized added values for their product varieties, in order to achieve a differentiator that allows them to stand out from competitors.
These sought for elements have changed throughout the years, and also according to fashion. Natural ingredients have been important Marketing strategies. Proteins, vitamins and other active additives have been the basis for the creation of new product categories. Provitamins, keratin, herbs, honey, polybine, oats, almond milk, aloe vera, etc. are some of the current shampoo ingredients that have shown to have added benefits to the product basic cleaning action. “Egg shampoo” seems to be long gone, and the “normal, dry or oily hair” classification, by which previous leading-edge products catalogued consumers, even more so.
All these sought for added value elements have a great influence and are the basis for Marketing strategies. Within these, they specifically affect those referred to advertising.
English to Spanish: Clinical Research Study – Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) General field: Medical
Source text - English Introduction
Rheumatoid-arthritis (RA) is a rather common chronic autoimmune disease causing inflammation in multiple joints of the hands, feet, and elsewhere in the body. The disease affects women more often than men and can occur in all age groups, with a peak incidence in the 4th and 5th decades of life. The prevalence in western societies is around 0.8%, making it the most common inflammatory musculoskeletal disease (osteoarthristis, which is more common, is considered a degenerative-metabolic disorder). Because of its chronic nature and its propensity to cause irreversible damage to the cartilaginous and bony structures in and around the joints, RA has a major impact on the quality of life of the patient. When inadequately treated, the course of the disease is typically chronic and undulating with progressively more joint destruction and increasing loss of physical function and handicap. The consequences for society are therefore also significant: RA is a major cause of long-term sick-leave and permanent disability, leading to very high costs to society from RA.

Experience
Years of experience: 15. Registered at ProZ.com: Mar 2012.
Granddaughter to English and Danish immigrants, English has been the language spoken at home always and still is. Born in Argentina, I was raised in a Spanish speaking environment. Both languages are equally natural to me, going from one to the other is no effort.
I remember my grandmother reading to us for hours, Dickens, Kipling, Shakespeare, … explaining to us that this was their ‘evening TV session’ when young. This passion for books was thus passed on.
I have a BA in Business Management and have also studied Hotel Management/Tourism.
I worked for over 10 years for Unilever Latin America in the areas of Marketing, Media and Marketing Research, developing, launching and communicating new consumer goods. Getting to know the target was essential, listening out for new insights, words that appeared to have more to them, potential to be turned into ideas. Wording was essential, phrasing had to be precise, hitting the nail on the head was the key to success. Concepts and all supportive material were developed in both languages.
I then went on to develop our own construction business. Here there was also a lot of wording and concept development, as well as business case presentations to investors. www.buildgreens.com.ar
We then decided as a family to move down South, Patagonia, shifting to a quieter environment.
I have been working as a full-time freelance translator since 2009.
Initially, almost exclusively for Quintiles Argentina S.A., an important clinical research company, translating/proof-reading protocols, investigator brochures, informed consent forms, Ministry of Health and Ethics Committees documents and contracts for Latin America. Clinical Research involves an intensive work rhythm and very short deadlines (please see letter of recommendation attached). I have also incorporated other clients within this area.
My translating experience has also extended into Business Management, Marketing and Strategy and Tourism through Deloitte Consulting SRL (Argentina) and Buzios Tour Business Plus (Argentina).
Every translating project is a challenge in itself. Specific terms must be cross-checked, best usage confirmed, wording must be precise, grammar must be perfect. This is what I enjoy doing.
Horse riding and mountain trekking are my outdoor passions. I also love knitting and reading to my children.
I look forward to working with you!
