Source text - English The country of Singapore is essentially one city on one large island (230 square miles) that sits at the tip of the Malaysian peninsula, about 60 sweltering miles north of the equator. The island became a strategic British holding in the 1800s, and was controlled by the Japanese during WWII. Singapore achieved independence by 1965, and has become one of Asia’s industrial and financial powerhouses since then.
Downtown Singapore’s Raffles Square bustles with Chinese businessmen on cell phones, high-rise office buildings, and sidewalk billboards that track worldwide stock markets. Air conditioning pours to the sidewalks from the open doors of fashion stores, and smells of seafood waft from expensive street markets. The city has remnants of British colonial architecture, as well as pockets of diversity like Chinatown, Arab Street, and Little India. Everything in the country is antiseptically clean, due in part to national laws such as those prohibiting spitting and chewing gum. Skyscrapers glisten, first world automobiles drive in orderly manner, and exhaust is undetectable. Singapore is a first world island in the middle of a third world region.
We spent the day roaming downtown, where the climate was the most sweltering tropical heat I had ever felt, and where the clean business-like atmosphere was downright boring. Although the first world amenities were nice, the small city lacked the excitement of travelling in less-developed areas. By evening we had decided to catch a morning train heading north to Malaysia.

Bio
Twenty-four years old Italian born in a seaside town near Venice.
My background is therefore mostly in tourism but I have many other interests and hobbies, some of them are skateboarding, playing/making music and videoediting.
What am I doing in the translation and linguistic field? I have been interested in foreign languages and translation studies since I was 11 years old. My passion for skateboarding made me want to travel and study languages.
I attended a state institute for commmerce and tourism in my home town and then I studied translation studies at the university of Trieste (S.S.L.M.I.T.), where I got a Bachelor's Degree.
My dissertation was about the Italian language of skateboard magazines "L'italiano delle riviste di skateboard", where I speak not only about its linguistic aspects but also about its social and anthropological aspects. The dissertation included also a terminological glossary in which I underline interesting comparisons between some English words and its Italian translations.
At the University I attended a full year course in healthcare interpreting and a full year course in commercial translations.
During the years of University I had been working as Pool Lifeguard and then I started working as receptionist. After my graduation I kept on working on my own translation projects, which were mainly in the field of skateboard magazines and glossaries.
