English to Chinese: 7th ProZ.com Translation Contest - Entry #5419
Source text - English Winters used to be cold in England. We, my parents especially, spent them watching the wrestling. The wrestling they watched on their black-and-white television sets on Saturday afternoons represented a brief intrusion of life and colour in their otherwise monochrome lives. Their work overalls were faded, the sofa cover—unchanged for years—was faded, their memories of the people they had been before coming to England were fading too. My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.
When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. It was only a qualified victory, however. You'd see the winner, exhausted, barely able to wave to the crowd. The triumph was mainly one of survival.

Source text - English 8.0 Termination for Default and Term of the Agreement
On or prior to the seventeenth (17th) anniversary of the License Date, each Party shall deliver to the other Party a written notice indicating whether the Party delivering the notice desires to extend the term of this Agreement beyond the twentieth (20th) anniversary of the License Date for a period of at least ten (10) additional years. If both Parties deliver a notice indicating a desire to extend this Agreement, then, subject to obtaining any required governmental approvals, this Agreement shall be extended for the period agreed upon by the Parties or, absent such agreement, for the shorter of the two extension periods indicated in the notices delivered by the Parties.
Entire Agreement. This Agreement and the other agreements referred to herein embody the entire agreement of the parties as to the subject matter contained in this Agreement. There are no promises, terms, conditions or obligations between the Parties regarding the subject matter of this Agreement other than those contained in this Agreement, and the other agreements referred to herein.
Translation - Chinese 8.0
Source text - English The DB2 XML Extender consists of a set of stored procedures, user-defined functions (UDFs), and user-defined data types (UDTs) which add XML capabilities on top of the core DB2 engine. Equipped with an XML parser and XML-specific logic in its procedures and UDFs, the XML Extender performs XML storage and retrieval (supported by traditional DB2 engine features). You can use the XML Extender with either an XML Extender Column or an XML Extender Collection.
An XML Extender Column allows you to store XML documents intact as plain unparsed text. This process is quite simple, but ignores the internal structure of the XML documents. You can choose to make the underlying storage a CLOB column, a VARCHAR column, or files within the file system. In a VARCHAR column, the XML Extender only stores documents up to 3KB in size -- a limit which is hard to guarantee in many applications. Knowledgeable database administrators (DBAs) can change the limit to 32k, but often even this maximum cannot be guaranteed. External file storage is more flexible but does not benefit from database-managed persistency and integrity. This is why CLOBs, which can store documents up to 2GB in size, have emerged as the most common choice for XML Extender Columns.
English to Chinese: contract
Source text - English Each party shall indemnify and hold harmless the other party, its shareholders, directors, officers, employees, agents, designees and assignees, or any of them, from and against all losses, damages, liabilities, expenses, costs, claims, suits, demands, actions, proceedings, judgments, assessments, deficiencies and charges (collectively, "Damages") caused by, relating to or arising from the performance by such party in accordance with this Contract of its obligations hereunder, and Buyer shall also indemnify Seller, without limiting the foregoing, for any such item caused by, relating to or arising from (a) the programming services which are authorized for viewing and using the System, including any assertion that any such programming service involves copyright infringement, (b) any disputes between Buyer and any of its program distributors or other distributors or affiliates,(c) any disputes or claims involving the subscribers for Buyer's programming services, or (d) any assertion that Buyer has been involved in, that Buyer's conduct of subscription involves, or that Buyer's use of the System involves, any unfair competition or violations of laws, rules or regulations.
Source text - English For the vast majority of users, the viable SAP R/3 platform choices through 2001 will be limited to Windows NT (on Intel) and Unix (Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, IBM and Seimens Nixdorf), while OS/390 Open Edition and OS/400 will be available for current users whose platform loyalty outweighs other considerations (0.8 probability).
Key Issue: How should users best select server platforms and vendors for RDBMS and application server roles during the next five years?
[graphic chart, omitted]
The chart above summarizes our major findings regarding three critical
differentiators for SAP R/3 platform selection: Market share (a current snapshot -- expect improvements for Windows NT and Sun), Performance and scaling (determined by current high water marks) and High availability (failover and clustering functionality). By the time a platform decision must be made, most users have already contracted with an external service provider or system integrator for the R/3 implementation assistance required, so system vendors’ R/3 professional service expertise may be an irrelevant differentiator. The timeliness and quality of system vendors’ hardware and software maintenance can be a differentiator, but only if verified by "local" references. System vendors that propose a heterogeneous solution (e.g., Windows NT application servers running against a Unix RDBMS server) introduce another level of management and problem resolution complexity and management cost into the picture.
Action Item: We recommend that users always check vendors local references for hardware maintenance, due to extreme quality variations we have seen on a geographic basis.
Translation - Chinese 对绝大多数用户,可行的SAP R/3平台选择直到2001年将仅限于 Windows NT(Intel平台)和Unix(Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, IBM 和 Seimens Nixdorf) ,而 OS/390 Open Edition 和 OS/400将提供给那些首先考虑平台忠诚度(概率0.8)的现有用户。
Source text - English CAUTION: Misuse of empty containers can be hazardous. Empty containers can be hazardous if used to store toxic, flammable, or reactive materials. Cutting or welding of empty containers might cause fire, explosion or toxic fumes from residues. Do not pressurize or expose to open flame or heat. Keep container closed and drum bungs in place.
Brief contact is not irritating. Prolonged contact, as with clothing wetted with material, may cause defatting of skin or irritation, seen as local redness with possible mild discomfort.
Other than the potential skin irritation effects noted above, acute (short term) adverse effects are not expected from brief skin contact, see other effects, below, and Section 11 for information regarding potential long term effects.
Vapors or mist, in excess of permissible concentrations, or in unusually high concentrations generated from spraying, heating the material or as from exposure in poorly ventilated areas or confined spaces, may cause irritation of the nose and throat, headache, nausea, and drowsiness.
