Translation - English 2004 was a year marred with catastrophes; starting with the earthquake in Bam Iran on December 26, 2003, and ending with the tsunami in Asia that claimed more than 300,000 lives. There were an even greater number of emergency situations that arose from non-natural disasters. The Palestinian and Iraqi conflicts received wide media attention. Then there were ‘forgotten’ conflicts in which all Geneva Conventions were violated in places such as Chechnya, Darfur, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Nepal, and Colombia where offenses occurred systematically against civilians.
The tsunami in particular had an enormous impact and resulted in a monumental worldwide response. Generous offers of help poured into the affected areas. This incredible worldwide mobilization of individual people, organizations, and governments offering personal and financial help to the survivors, illustrates how much the world is capable of showing compassion and working together in an emergency situation.
In contrast, sorely lacking is the international interest in crises such as in the Democratic Republic Congo and Uganda where women and children are especially victimized because of their social and cultural vulnerability to abuse.
The tragedy unfolding in Darfur is an example of one of the most tragic humanitarian crises in recent years. Despite the adoption of the UN resolutions to protect civilians and offer legal opportunities to prosecute those responsible for war crimes; villages are still burned down, people are still attacked, and women and girls are still victims of sexual assaults. Doctors of the World, providing medical care in Camp Kalma, have publicly and repeatedly asked for respect of the UN resolutions.
