1. A method of transmitting data in a communication system, comprising:
encoding a data packet to obtain a plurality of code bits for the data packet;
forming a plurality of blocks of code bits with the plurality of code bits;
determining a modulation scheme to use for each of the plurality of blocks, wherein at least two different modulation schemes are used for the plurality of blocks; and
mapping the code bits in each of the plurality of blocks in accordance with the modulation scheme used for the block to generate modulation symbols for the block, wherein a plurality of blocks of modulation symbols are generated for the plurality of blocks of code bits.
2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
transmitting the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols in sequential order.
3. The method of claim 2, wherein the transmitting the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols in sequential order comprises
transmitting a first block of modulation symbols, generated with a first modulation scheme having a highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes, first in the sequential order.
4. The method of claim 3, wherein the transmitting the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols in sequential order further comprises
transmitting a second block of modulation symbols, generated with a second modulation scheme having a second highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes, second in the sequential order.
5. The method of claim 3, wherein the transmitting the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols in sequential order further comprises
transmitting each remaining one of the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols, generated with a second modulation scheme having a lower order than the first modulation scheme, after the first block of modulation symbols.
6. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining the modulation scheme to use for each of the plurality of blocks comprises
determining a spectral efficiency associated with each of the plurality of blocks, and
selecting the modulation scheme for each block based on the associated spectral efficiency.
7. The method of claim 6, wherein the selecting the modulation scheme for each block comprises
selecting the modulation scheme for each block from among a plurality of modulation schemes supported by the system.
8. The method of claim 6, wherein the determining the spectral efficiency associated with each of the plurality of blocks comprises
determining a position in which the block is transmitted among the plurality of blocks, and
determining the spectral efficiency associated with the block based on modulation schemes used for blocks to be transmitted earlier, if any.
9. The method of claim 6, wherein the selecting the modulation scheme for each block comprises
selecting a modulation scheme associated with a number of code bits per modulation symbol that is at least twice the spectral efficiency associated with the block or is a modulation scheme with a highest order among a plurality of modulation schemes supported by the system.
10. The method of claim 6, wherein the selecting the modulation scheme for each block further comprises
selecting quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) for the block if the associated spectral efficiency is one or less.
11. The method of claim 1, wherein the encoding the data packet to obtain the plurality of code bits for the data packet comprises
encoding the data packet with a forward error correction (FEC) code having a fixed code rate to generate the plurality of code bits for the data packet.
12. The method of claim 1, wherein the encoding the data packet to obtain the plurality of code bits for the data packet comprises
encoding the data packet with a Turbo code having a fixed code rate to generate the plurality of code bits for the data packet.
13. The method of claim 1, wherein the forming the plurality of blocks of code bits with the plurality of code bits comprises
puncturing the plurality of code bits with a plurality of puncturing patterns to generate the plurality of blocks of code bits.
14. The method of claim 1, wherein the forming the plurality of blocks of code bits with the plurality of code bits comprises
forming each block of code bits with code bits selected from among the plurality of code bits and not included in other ones of the plurality of blocks of code bits.
15. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
transmitting at least one of the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols.
16. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
transmitting a first block of modulation symbols among the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols; and
transmitting remaining ones of the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols, one block of modulation symbols at a time, until the data packet is decoded correctly by a receiver or all of the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols are transmitted.
17. An apparatus in a wireless communication system, comprising:
an encoder operative to encode a data packet to obtain a plurality of code bits for the data packet;
a partitioning unit operative to form a plurality of blocks of code bits with the plurality of code bits;
a controller operative to determine a modulation scheme to use for each of the plurality of blocks, wherein at least two different modulation schemes are used for the plurality of blocks; and
a symbol mapping unit operative to map the code bits in each of the plurality of blocks in accordance with the modulation scheme used for the block to generate modulation symbols for the block, wherein a plurality of blocks of modulation symbols are generated for the plurality of blocks of code bits.
18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein further comprising:
a multiplexer operative to provide the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols in a sequential order and to provide first in the sequential order a first block of modulation symbols generated with a first modulation scheme having a highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes.
19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the controller is operative to determine a spectral efficiency associated with each of the plurality of blocks and to select the modulation scheme for each block based on the associated spectral efficiency.
20. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the controller is further operative to direct transmission of a first block of modulation symbols among the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols and to direct transmission of remaining ones of the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols, one block of modulation symbols at a time, until the data packet is decoded correctly by a receiver or all of the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols are transmitted.
21. An apparatus in a communication system, comprising:
means for encoding a data packet to obtain a plurality of code bits for the data packet;
means for forming a plurality of blocks of code bits with the plurality of code bits;
means for determining a modulation scheme to use for each of the plurality of blocks, wherein at least two different modulation schemes are used for the plurality of blocks; and
means for mapping the code bits in each of the plurality of blocks in accordance with a modulation scheme used for the block to generate modulation symbols for the block, wherein a plurality of blocks of modulation symbols are generated for the plurality of blocks of code bits.
22. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:
means for transmitting first a first block of modulation symbols generated with a first modulation scheme having a highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes; and
means for transmitting second a second block of modulation symbols generated with a second modulation scheme having a second highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes.
23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the means for determining the modulation scheme to use for each of the plurality of blocks comprises
means for determining a spectral efficiency associated with each of the plurality of blocks, and
means for selecting the modulation scheme for each block based on the associated spectral efficiency
24. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising:
means for transmitting a first block of modulation symbols among the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols; and
means for transmitting remaining ones of the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols, one block of modulation symbols at a time, until the data packet is decoded correctly by a receiver or all of the plurality of blocks of modulation symbols are transmitted.
25. A method of transmitting data in a communication system, comprising:
encoding a data packet to obtain a plurality of code bits for the data packet;
forming a block of code bits with the plurality of code bits;
determining a modulation scheme to use for the block of code bits;
mapping the code bits in the block in accordance with the modulation scheme to obtain modulation symbols for the block; and
repeating the forming the block of code bits, the determining the modulation scheme to use for the block, and the mapping the code bits in the block for another block until the data packet is decoded correctly by a receiver or a maximum number of blocks have been transmitted for the data packet, and wherein at least two different modulation schemes are used for the maximum number of blocks.
26. The method of claim 25, wherein the determining the modulation scheme to use for the block of code bits comprises
selecting a first modulation scheme with a highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes for a block to be transmitted first.
27. The method of claim 26, wherein the determining the modulation scheme to use for the block of code bits further comprises
selecting a second modulation scheme with has a second highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes for a block to be transmitted second.
28. The method of claim 27, wherein the determining the modulation scheme to use for the block of code bits further comprises
selecting the second modulation scheme for each of remaining ones of the maximum number of blocks.
29. A method of receiving data in a communication system, comprising:
obtaining a plurality of blocks of received data symbols for a data packet;
determining a modulation scheme used for each of the plurality of blocks, wherein at least two different modulation schemes are used for the plurality of blocks;
performing detection on each of the plurality of blocks of received data symbols in accordance with the modulation scheme used for the block to generate detected data symbols for the block; and
decoding detected data symbols generated from the plurality of blocks of received data symbols to obtain a decoded packet.
30. The method of claim 29, wherein the performing detection on each of the plurality of blocks of received data symbols comprises
generating a set of log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for a set of code bits for each received data symbol.
31. The method of claim 29, wherein the performing detection on each of the plurality of blocks of received data symbols comprises
performing detection on a first block of received data symbols, obtained first, in accordance with a first modulation scheme having a highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes.
32. The method of claim 31, wherein the performing detection on each of the plurality of blocks of received data symbols further comprises
performing detection on a second block of received data symbols, obtained second, in accordance with a second modulation scheme having a second highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes.
33. The method of claim 29, wherein the decoding the detected data symbols comprises
after obtaining each of the plurality of blocks of received data symbols, decoding detected data symbols generated for all blocks of received data symbols to obtain the decoded packet.
34. An apparatus in a communication system, comprising:
a receiver unit operative to obtain a plurality of blocks of received data symbols for a data packet;
a controller operative to determine a modulation scheme used for each of the plurality of blocks, wherein at least two different modulation schemes are used for the plurality of blocks;
a detector operative to perform detection on each of the plurality of blocks of received data symbols in accordance with the modulation scheme used for the block to generate detected data symbols for the block; and
a decoder operative to decode detected data symbols generated from the plurality of blocks of received data symbols to obtain a decoded packet.
35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the detector is operative to perform detection on a block of received data symbols, obtained first, in accordance with a first modulation scheme having a highest order among the at least two different modulation schemes.
36. An apparatus in a communication system, comprising:
means for obtaining a plurality of blocks of received data symbols for a data packet;
means for determining a modulation scheme used for each of the plurality of blocks, wherein at least two different modulation schemes are used for the plurality of blocks;
means for performing detection on each of the plurality of blocks of received data symbols in accordance with the modulation scheme used for the block to generate detected data symbols for the block; and
means for decoding detected data symbols generated from the plurality of blocks of received data symbols to obtain a decoded packet.
37. A method of receiving data in a communication system, comprising:
obtaining a block of received data symbols for a data packet;
determining a modulation scheme used for the block of received data symbols;
performing detection on the block of received data symbols in accordance with the modulation scheme to generate detected data symbols for the block, wherein each detected data symbol is an estimate of a modulation symbol for the data packet;
decoding detected data symbols generated from all blocks of received data symbols obtained for the data packet to derive a decoded packet; and
repeating the obtaining the block of received data symbols, the determining the modulation scheme used for the block, the performing detection on the block of received data symbols, and the decoding the detected data symbols for another block of received data symbols if the data packet is decoded in error and if a maximum number of blocks of received data symbols have not been obtained for the data packet, and wherein at least two different modulation schemes are used for the maximum number of blocks of received data symbols.
38. The method of claim 37, further comprising:
combining multiple detected data symbols generated for each modulation symbol.

un moyen pour déterminer une efficacité spectrale associée à chacun de la pluralité de blocs, et
un moyen pour sélectionner la technique de modulation pour chaque bloc sur la base de l'efficacité spectrale associée.

l'obtention d'une pluralité de blocs de symboles de données reçus pour un paquet de données ;
la détermination d'une technique de modulation utilisée pour chacun de la pluralité de blocs, au moins deux techniques de modulation différentes étant utilisées pour la pluralité de blocs ;
l'exécution d'une détection sur chacun de la pluralité de blocs de symboles de données reçus en fonction de la technique de modulation utilisée pour le bloc afin de produire des symboles de données détectés pour le bloc ; et

un détecteur ayant pour fonction d'exécuter une détection sur chacun de la pluralité de blocs de symboles de données reçus en fonction de la technique de modulation utilisée pour le bloc afin de produire des symboles de données détectés pour le bloc ; et
un décodeur ayant pour fonction de décoder des symboles de données détectés produits à partir de la pluralité de blocs de symboles de données reçus afin d'obtenir un paquet décodé.
35.- Appareil selon la revendication 34, caractérisé en ce que le détecteur a pour fonction d'exécuter une détection sur un bloc de symboles de données reçus, obtenu en premier, en fonction d'une première technique de modulation ayant un ordre le plus élevé parmi les au moins deux techniques de modulation différentes.
36.- Appareil dans un système de communication, comprenant :
un moyen pour obtenir une pluralité de blocs de symboles de données reçus pour un paquet de données ;
un moyen pour déterminer une technique de modulation utilisée pour chacun de la pluralité de blocs, au moins deux techniques de modulation différentes étant utilisées pour la pluralité de blocs ;
un moyen pour exécuter une détection sur chacun de la pluralité de blocs de symboles de données reçus en fonction de la technique de modulation utilisée pour le bloc afin de produire des symboles de données détectés pour le bloc ; et
un moyen pour décoder des symboles de données détectés produits à partir de la pluralité de blocs de symboles de données reçus afin d'obtenir un paquet décodé.
37.- Procédé de réception de données dans un système de communication, comprenant :
l'obtention d'un bloc de symboles de données reçus pour un paquet de données ;
la détermination d'une technique de modulation utilisée pour le bloc de symboles de données reçus ;
l'exécution d'une détection sur le bloc de symboles de données reçus en fonction de la technique de modulation afin de produire des symboles de données détectés pour le bloc, chaque symbole de données détecté étant une estimée d'un symbole de modulation pour le paquet de données ;
le décodage de symboles de données détectés produits à partir de tous les blocs de symboles de données reçus obtenus pour le paquet de données afin d'obtenir un paquet décodé ; et
la répétition de l'obtention du bloc de symboles de données reçus, de la détermination de la technique de modulation utilisée pour le bloc, de l'exécution d'une détection sur le bloc de symboles de données reçus, et du décodage des symboles de données détectés pour un autre bloc de symboles de données reçus si le paquet de données est décodé de façon erronée et si un nombre maximum de blocs de symboles de données reçus n'a pas été obtenu pour le paquet de données, et au moins deux techniques de modulation différentes étant utilisées pour le nombre maximum de blocs de symboles de données reçus.
38.- Procédé selon la revendication 37, comprenant en outre :
la combinaison de multiples symboles de données détectés produits pour chaque symbole de modulation.
