Due to popular demand, this fledgling freelancer is looking to buy a version of Trados. Of course I prefer my Deja Vu, but it doesn't matter when clients are demanding Trados.
I recently passed the test translation for a new agency. As it turns out, they work mostly with Trados and Across, as opposed to my initial impression. I asked them whether the 2011 Starter Edition would work, but my contact didn't know, only that most of their clients are demanding Trados 2011 today. ... See more

I asked them whether the 2011 Starter Edition would work, but my contact didn't know, only that most of their clients are demanding Trados 2011 today.
The reason for not buying the full 2011 Suite is that I just don't know if I will stick with Trados for long. I have never tried Trados, I have heard lots of criticism regarding its costs/quality/support, and I am very careful about spending that amount of money on something that might not work. The Starter is a good way for me to try it out and see if I like it.
I have done the mandatory Googling, yet couldn't find much about this. Maybe my Google-skills failed today.

The biggest difference is that Starter Edition supports only one TM at a time, and this TM must be smaller than 5000 units. With Freelance Edition, you can use as many TMs as you wish, the size is unlimited.

Starter Edition is great to get familiar with the software and its features. 5000 units per TM is enough for starters (unless client provides you with their own TM - you would not be able to use it if it exceeds 5000 units). Price of Starter Edition is very good, it if worth a try. After first year you will know Trados well enough to choose one of following:
- subscribe to Starter Edition for next year (if you use it for smaller clients and you are not planning to create your main TM in Trados)
- upgrade to Freelance Edition (if you start using Trados as your main CAT and you want to make your main TM in this software)
- stop using Trados, use different CAT
I subscribed to Starter Edition at first, after three months I bought Freelance Edition. And I am happy that I did so - although the only extra feature I use in Freelance is support of multiple TMs of unlimited size.
