Hi everyone,
a client has contacted me for a new project. I am a MemoQ user (MemoQ, Across, Memsource user actually), not a Trados one but apparently they do need Trados 2011 or 2014 for this specific project.
They encourage me to get the software telling me that licenses are availabe at a price starting from 90 EUR/year.
I actually looked for this information on the Internet but I can't find anything.

Can someone help me? Do you know whether it's indeed possible

Can someone help me? Do you know whether it's indeed possible to get a license for 1 year for that price? Does this mean the tool remains accessible only online or how does it work?

Help needed

Starter Edition Jun 14, 2015

The client probably refers to Starter Edition, see this page. This edition is limited in many ways, but it is a good way to start with Trados - actually it was my first edition too. However, if you plan to use Trados as your primary tool, you will soon upgrade to Freelance Edition (but you probably won't, as you already use MemoQ).

If you think that this investment is worth it, go for it. If you think that in cases, when the client strictly demands some specific tool, they should also provide you with proper license, try to convince them to do so - or try to set your own terms, so you can use your MemoQ.

Thanks Pavel... Jun 14, 2015

I was clueless, so I couldn't find this option earlier today.

The client, who actually mentioned I needed Trados 2011 or 2014 only after I had already taken and passed the translation test, says that I need to stick with Trados and cannot use MemoQ as a consequence of the fact that "I wouldn't be able to access the server-based TM and server-based Multiterm" if I used a different tool.

The only situation I would like to avoid in order not to end up in a conflict is that the Starter Edition later proves insufficient to processing the tasks. Do you think this might happen?

I know that clients who ask for a specific tool should also provide those licenses, but I also know that most don't.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Ketty Jun 14, 2015

Why don't you download a free trial version for starters? That should be sufficient for 1 assignment or a few smaller ones, if not too large.

You can then decide for yourself whether or not you want to purchase it without any initial investment.

All the best,
Nicole.

Ongoing Jun 14, 2015

Hi Nicole,
it's an ongoing project: as far as I understood, not huge assignments but ongoing, so I kinda have to commit or not.

What I am sure about is that I won't buy a full freelancer license for the moment: my other clients use the tools I already own.

Drat! Jun 14, 2015

I was hoping that Trados was going to the monthly subscription model like the new Word for Windows, so that I could only pay during the months I use actually it.
