I wish there were another option, such as "Translating, along with something else". I hope to be teaching French in a few years, while still be translating...

Good suggestion, Timothy. The data will be skewed of course, but I have added that option midway.

"Translating and something else" would also have been a good option - in my case, once I've converted my South African legal qualifications to EU requirements, I'll be combining more legal consulting and possibly lecturing with translating - but then again who knows what tomorrow holds .....
Nice to see most people intend to continue translating though.

... two years ago, I would never have thought I would go into freelance translation. You just don't know what will happen.
Maybe I'll be made an offer I can't refuse, maybe I will move abroad, or give it all up to go back to college - who knows?
I don't expect I will freelance for ever, but I do see my job expanding into project management if *touch wood* the orders keep rolling in.

I would also like to maintain my links with a Dublin university and their translation course. So academia could beckon too.
However I like the independance freelancing offers me, so I don't suppose I will ever give it up entirely. It is important to keep trying new things and incorporate them into your professional life.

I love translating, so even if I do get into something else (as has happened already during my career), I will keep on translating, even for "free".

this may sound weird, but this is an ablity one cannot deny when one is upto it, additionally proz.com gives the best opportunity, where one is never enough of a translator. But something else is also important, namely to rebalance oneself, I do not mean not only financially though, but while comparing my type of projects I can say a full-time translation can get one really crazzieeeee.., sometimes I think agencies that are loaded with projects are just happy to find someone willing to their wor... I need my time for sports or painting or go out or teaching, group discussions, er... or ... etc, just to refind myself in other roles. After all one can never be the best of all.
