Summary:The webinar lays out the basics steps in the process of translating culture-specific elements in scientific, professional and official translations (SPOTs). The webinar is designed as 60 minutes of practice and sample translations of rather demanding areas of culture-specific elements. Instead of footnotes and additional explanations, accuracy in SPOTs is to be achieved by means of equivalents as close as possible to the original culture-specific element. Thus the only tip & trick is to develop the skill of finding the perfect equivalent in the target language.
Description
This webinar is meant to be the first part of a larger training course the second of which is a self-paced training course. The webinar would lay out the basics steps in the process of translating culture-specific elements in scientific, professional and official translations (SPOTs) whereas the second part is designed as a follow-up and an in-depth training course full of instructions how to actually handle SPOTs in practice. Both training sessions will be based on a new approach in translation, the cogno-cultural approach. This approach relies heavily on the aspect of cognition and culture, the two most important elements in understanding and translating culture-specific elements in SPOTs.

The webinar is designed as 60 minutes of practice and sample translations of tricky areas known as rather demanding areas of culture-specific elements. The fact that they appear in SPOTs makes them even more difficult as in non-literary translation, footnotes and cumbersome additional translator's explanations are not recommended.

The condense and very precise context of SPOTs sets the requirement that accuracy is achieved by means of an equivalent as close as possible to the original culture-specific element. In other words, the only tip & trick is to develop the skill of finding the perfect equivalent in the target language.

The agenda of the course will be as follows:

1. Workshop session: Examples & practice (50 min)
2. Q&A 10 min

All the material needed for this webinar will be included in the presentation whereas extra material will be included in the self-paced training course.

Candidates are kindly advised to have a pen and a notepad ready for the practical workshop examples in the webinar.

question re: this trainingAug 22, 2013

I'm preparing for the ATA exam, and interested in mainly improving faithfulness and word choice/terminology. Do you think this course would help me?

Sorry for not answering earlier Sep 2, 2013

Hello gud_annet,

I apologize for not answering earlier, but I have not seen the question until now. I really do not know how I could have missed it.

Yes, "faithfulness and word choice/ terminology" can most certainly be considered part of cogno-cultural issues to handle in translation. The webinar (and the self-paced training) covers the most common types of culture-based problems (cognates, false friends, eponyms, etc.) which are rather demanding.
