- Die Didaktik unterscheidet formelles von informellem Lernen. Formelles Lernen findet in den klassischen Bildungseinrichtungen (z.B. Schule, Universität) statt, während informelles Lernen in nicht speziell für das Lernen konzipierten Kontexten stattfindet (z.B. Lernen am Arbeitsplatz, Fremdsprachenlernen durch die Nutzung verschiedener Computerprogramme, die nicht für den Fremdsprachenerwerb entwickelt wurden, Lernen in der Familie, etc.). Die Fremdsprachendidaktik beispielsweise geht davon aus, das die Web 2.0-Tools stark zu einer Stärkung des informellen Lernens beim Fremdsprachenerwerb beigetragen haben und noch beitragen. - Informelles Lernen erfolgt im Unterschied zu formellem Lernen außerhalb von Institutionen und endet nicht in einer Zertifizierung des erworbenen Wissens oder der erworbenen Fähigkeiten. Formelles Lernen findet primär in Klassenräumen statt, jedoch auch wieder nicht ausschließlich[2]. Informelles Lernen kann auch in Institutionen stattfinden, ist aber nicht an Klassenräumen gebunden und meist gering strukturiert. Die Lerninitiative und Lernkontrolle liegt beim Lernenden und ist nicht abhängig von einer Institution. Inzidentelles Lernen ist Bestandteil des informellen Lernens und findet beiläufig, nebenbei und meist unbewusst statt (Marsick & Watkins 2001). Settings für inzidentelles Lernen sind interpersonelle Interaktion und Kommunikation, Hobbys und etwas Neues über Versuch und Irrtum ausprobieren. Informelles Lernen findet bewusst statt, aber nicht strukturiert (Marsick & Watkins 2001). Für Marsick und Watkins (2001) zählen selbstgesteuertes Lernen, Mentoring, Coaching und Networking zum Bereich des informellen Lernens. Schugurensky (2000) benennt konkrete Beispiele für informelles Lernen wie Sprachen lernen oder das Erlernen einer Sportart. Boekaerts und Minnaert (1999) unterteilen in verschiedene Bereiche des informellen Lernens, nämlich in Lernen von Personen wie Familienmitgliedern oder Experten, Lernen an bestimmten Orten, wie z.B. in einem Zoo, oder Lernen von Medien, wie z.B. das Internet. Für Boekaerts und Minnaert ist der informelle Lernprozess gekennzeichnet durch Freiwilligkeit, Selbstbestimmung und Exploration. Lernende in einem informellen Kontext sind intrinsisch motiviert, verwenden spontan selbstregulierende Maßnahmen und setzen sich eigene globale Lernziele. Lernen findet dabei in einem situierten Kontext an „realen“ Objekten statt, oft mit Personen, die ähnliche Interessen und Ziele verfolgen (Boekaerts & Minnaert 1999). - Bildungsforschung by Claus Steiger (X)

- Informalno obrazovanje (eng. informal education) je neplanirano učenje koje se odvija u svakodnevnom životu i može se sticati na osnovu svakodnevnog iskustva, kao što je iskustvo vezano za porodicu, prijatelje, grupe vršnjaka, medije i druge uticaje u nečijem okruženju; ovaj tip učenja odvija se na neredovnoj osnovi tokom čovekovog života. Ovome domenu pripada poseban oblik informalnog obrazovanja, koji on naziva slučajno učenje ili učenje "en passant" (u hodu): "reč je o vrsti informalnog učenja koje je potpuno neplanirano (i često nesvesno) i slučajan je nusproizvod drugih aktivnosti".
