Summary:
Don't add quotes to your glossaries. Add straight double quotes to your memories (if necessary).

I am trying to find a solution to the fuzzy matching problems resulting from differences in quotes (“, ”, ‘, ’, ", „, », «, ‹, ›,《 , 》, ') between different versions of the same document.

Matches from the glossary:

Observations:

  • Segment #3 is only a Fuzzy Match of segment #2.
  • Segment #4 is an Exact Match of segment #3!
  • Terms in source segments that contain double quotes, are recognized in the Glossary pane, auto-assembled in the Target segment editor, but not highlighted there. (A cosmetic glitch that is a little confusing.)

Conclusions:

  • The straight double quotes match all curly quotes (single or double).
  • Curly quotes (single or double) don't match other curly quotes.

Best practices:
TMs:

  • Replace all quotes with straight double quotes in the source segments (see below).
  • Replace all quotes with straight double quotes in the target segments.

Glossaries:

  • Don't add quotes to the source terms in your glossaries.
  • Don't add quotes to the target terms in your glossaries.
  • If necessary: Add quotes to your target segments during the translation phase.
  • Or better: Run Find and Replace actions on the target segments to add the appropriate quotes prior to doing your QA.

Adding quotes to the target segments May 19

You can do this via QA > Word lists > Find and replace in target segments:

You can save these client-specific replacement lists.

Note: I have no idea why the case is toggled.

Answer from the developer:

Please see the "Preserve case with replacement" option in the Find and Replace panel.

Final step: Replace all straight double quotes with curly double quotes May 21

Use this regular expressions to replace nearly all straight double quotes with curly double quotes:

Then search for any remaining straight double quotes, spanning tags or being unpaired in the segment, manually. Fix them too.

Edit: Whole words shouldn't be ticked.
