What is the procedure for someone who has past their DPSI(Health) interpreting course:
How does one go about getting clients and work.
As I am soon to start this course, and the whole career is new to me , i was wondering where one would start to find work.

I work as a medical interpreter, however, I work in the USA. Therefore, I can't tell much about the course you mentioned, however, I can tell how I started in this field. I received a certificate of completion for interpreters in the field in healthcare in Ohio in 2004, however, started teaching in Ohio, which was my main career. I only worked as an interpreter occasionally. In 2010 we moved to Georgia and now we live in Atlanta. This is when I decided to pursue intepreting in this field. ... I looked up major translation agencies in Atlanta, sent out my resume, and received quite a few phone calls. Currently there is no nationwide test in the USA that a medical interpreter has to pass, as opposed to court interpreters. Since my major was English, the agencies were satisfied with my credentials. Hospitals in Atlanta work only with the agencies, not with individuals, so this was my best chance. I currently work for 4 major agencies, not only in the medical field, but also in education (interpreting during parent-teacher conferences, etc.) and in the legal field. So this is what I would suggest doing, contacting translation agencies in your area and possibly hospitals to find out if you can leave your information for them or if they use an agency. If they do, you can get the name of the agency and then pursue this further.
Once again, I am not sure how the healthcare system is organized in the United Kingdom, so I hope this information helps. Oh, and another thing. I would also recommend becoming a member of the local or national association of interpreters and translators.
Good luck! ▲ Collapse | | | Luke Mersh United Kingdom Local time: 08:33 Spanish to English TOPIC STARTER Medical Interpreting | Feb 14, 2011 |
