I really hope someone has seen this before and can help me quickly because I have a huge project due on a tight schedule and I haven't even been able to start it yet because of this problem.

I have a bunch of documents with heavy formatting in pdf format. I'm not using a CAT tool because I don't have a good OCR conversion program. Every time I insert a table into Word and start typing first the mouse stops working, then the whole program cashes. I have a new laptop with Vista and

I have a bunch of documents with heavy formatting in pdf format. I'm not using a CAT tool because I don't have a good OCR conversion program. Every time I insert a table into Word and start typing first the mouse stops working, then the whole program cashes. I have a new laptop with Vista and Word 2007. I uninstalled Office 2007 and reinstalled it and it's still happening. I've checked online and I'm not finding anyone else with this problem, so I'm starting to suspect it's either Wordfast (I'm using the free version) or Trados (I have freelance 2007 and Studio 2009).

Anyone had this problem? I'm about to just uninstall all of the CAT tools...

It could be Wordfast Sep 9, 2009

I had a similar problem a few months ago and I only had Wordfast installed so maybe it's that! Try removing Wordfast first and see if that helps.
Maybe some of the more experienced CAT tool users will be able to offer a better solution though.
Good Luck!
Meg

Thanks for the response. Sep 9, 2009

It's working now. I uninstalled all programs related to Trados and two programs from Abbyy FineReader (trial versions) because I saw somewhere that Wordfast and Abbyy FineReader sometimes cause each other problems. Not sure which program was causing the problem, but it seems to be fixed now. *Huge sigh of relief*

Spoke too soon... Sep 9, 2009

Ugh, it just crashed again. This time when I went to save the file.

How do I get rid of Wordfast? It's not in the applications list.

Wordfast isn't an 'application' Sep 9, 2009

... so you won't find it in the list!

It is basically a sort of giant macro, and resides in the wordfast.dot template file that is (usually) located in the Word startup folder.

if you don't invoke it, it really oughtn't to cause problems, but if you want to uninstall it anyway, you should follow the instructions in the manual [wordfast.doc]; if all else fails, you can just delete the template file wordfast.dot.

As an intermediate step, you first might try unchecking it in 'Tools' > 'Modules and add-ons', which should at least disable it.

I have had problems with tables before, with Word all on its own — I once had to resort to converting each table individually to text, then converting them all back to tables again!

Hello Nicole!

I had exactly the same problem. Word + Huge table.. After precious hours I discovered I had introduced some code when I tryed to format the paragraph just above the area where I then pasted this huge table.

Hello Nicole!

I had exactly the same problem. Word + Huge table.. After precious hours I discovered I had introduced some code when I tryed to format the paragraph just above the area where I then pasted this huge table.

So I have two suggestions:

1. Method of the computer used as a typewriter or try and pray

a. remove the table
b. delete or cut the paragraph above the table(or the last part of the text you formated)
c. paste the table in the 'clean' area and start typing

If it doesn't crash - the paragraph you've deleted has a bug

2. Computer wiz method:
Shift+F1 This will show you the 'backstage' and the format of your document (not sure - never tried this with Word) If there is some odd code, it might be IT - the one causing all your problems ...

Hope this helps! Let us know when you solve it

Why uninstall? Sep 10, 2009

Any time I work with Word and I am not using another application interfacing with it (Complete Word Count, TRADOS, Multiterm, Wordfast, a pdf converter, whatever), I just do as Tony suggests (although in my computer is Tools, Templates and Add-ins). As a matter of fact I find myself doing it all the time because all templates are activated by the Normal template, at least in my case. I have never had the need nor do I see the need to uninstall/reinstall applications all the time, just deactivate them and reactivate them whenever you need them.

Well, turns out it had nothing to do with Trados or Wordfast Sep 15, 2009

I ended up borrowing a computer to finish the project because my backup computer is a laptop without a 10-key and as it happened this translation had a ton of numbers...

A computer-savvy friend finally took and look at it and it turns out the problem was caused by a Microsoft update. Apparently, the update wrote some garbage on the registry which caused all the problems. It was strange because the problem seemed to get worse every time I opened Word. At first it was only tables that were causing a problem, but eventually I couldn't even disable Wordfast because the program would crash before I could get to Tools.

So, I guess my faith in Trados and Wordfast is renewed but I can't say the same about Microsoft...
