Spellchecking bilingual files Thread poster: Heike Holthaus

Hi,
The finished files in my current translation project are bilingual (English/German). Unfortunately, the Microsoft spellchecker doesn't seem to like bilingual documents, as it checks the words in English with the German dictionary and vice versa.
Is there a trick to this or do I have to rely on manual spellchecking? Or is different software available?
I am also looking for QA software.
Grateful for your input.
Hi,
Could you tell me what kind of file you're trying to spellcheck? If it's a file with 2 columns, select the target column and set the target language under Word, then spellcheck with the whole column selected.
HTH,

Hi Bernard,
it is an English course and looks like this:
How much milk did you buy? (Wie viel Milch hast du gekauft?)
some German text
some mixed text
and so on. | | | Extract Target Text | Jan 23, 2013 |
Is there any way, you could extract the target text you want to spellcheck.
As a workaround, I would copy the text to be spellchecked into a new file, spellcheck it with the original open and then correct it in parallel, can think of any other option, would need your file to be able to suggest a better approach.
Another workaround would be to duplicate the file and hide the text you don't want spellchecked - if not too big - then use search and replace, replace hidden... See more Is there any way, you could extract the target text you want to spellcheck.

He did not eat any lunch today.

did + Subjekt + Verb
Did Jason go to work today?

Did they leave their books in my office?

Lektion 27:
Adjektive die das Aussehen einer Person beschreiben
Positiv:
beautiful (schön) - Verwenden wir im Allgemeinen zur Beschreibung von Frauen.
handsome (attraktiv) - Verwenden wir im Englischen für Männer.
good-looking (gut aussehend) - Verwenden wir für Männer und Frauen.
pretty (hübsch) - Ein positives Wort, welches das Aussehen einer Frau oder eines Kindes beschreibt.
cute - hat dieselbe Bedeutung wie pretty.
The text isn't even difficult, its those creepy typos I'm concerned about. ▲ Collapse | | | Heinrich Pesch Finland Local time: 11:16 Member (2003) Finnish to German + ... Your translation software is to blame | Jan 24, 2013 |
Any CAT tool should set the appropriate language to the produced segments automatically. But if you translated manually you have to assign the language manually too, I'm afraid. | | | Thayenga Germany Local time: 10:16 Member (2009) English to German + ... Choice of language | Jan 24, 2013 |
You can choose the language, also for the spell checker. This is double work, but at least you can spell check both languages. | | | Heike Holthaus United States Local time: 04:16 Member (2012) English to German + ... TOPIC STARTER The spell checker keeps switching | Jan 24, 2013 |
I set the spell checker language to German, I tell it to use the German dictionary.
Then I start the spell check. It keeps switching the dictionary from German to English, depending on the text. But it turns it around and uses the German dictionary for the English text and the English dictionary for the German text.
I use memoQ for the translation, but I just started using it and I am not too familiar with it yet and I have found mistakes, that memoQ didn't catch.

Microsoft Word deals with it nicely | Feb 18, 2013 |
I use Microsoft Word 10 (not sure if it works the same in earlier versions), and deal with it this way;
1. Make sure you have all languages in the document enabled for proofing (Options)
2. Mark all phrases in another language with proper language(Review/Language)
After that, Word spellchecks each fragment using its own language.
I do not trust Word's ability to detect language, in my experience, it cannot even detect French with all its stress symbol... See more I use Microsoft Word 10 (not sure if it works the same in earlier versions), and deal with it this way;
