Dear colleagues,

every time I want to close my MS Word installation, it asks whether I want to save the changes to TRADOS7.dot (although there are no apparent changes).

I have SDL Trados 2006 installed on my computer, and the mentioned MS Office suite 2003.

Re-installing Word or Trados doesn't fix the problem.

Thank you in advance!

Check if there's any plugin installed Jan 19, 2010

Hi,

This problem usually occurs when there are additional plugins installed. Try turning off any plugin you have installed except for Trados.

Hope it helps. Good luck!

This will happen if you play around with Word toolbars Jan 21, 2010

When I recorded macros on my Word toolbar, I was asked to save the Trados ro Normal template. I just did so and it works fine.

Maybe you're asked the question simply because you moved toolbar buttons around.

If you answer yes to the question, it is likely that it will be harmless, and you will be rid of this dialog box for good.
If it is not harmless, there is a backup copy of the template: look for the template name in your Trados program folder in Program Files

same problem with Trados 8.2.0 build 835 Jan 22, 2010

with Word 2003 without ANY changes in the toolbar
removing all other macros beyond Trados doesn't work
remaking .dot file doesn't work
already checked Adobe Acrobat issue
no workaround for this issue, currently

@ Philippe: you can say Yes 10 000 times and this issue will reappear like a zombie

Same problem with me Jan 22, 2010

I have the same problem. I have TRADOS 2007 and every time I close a Word document it asks me that question. It is not a big problem since all you have to do is press no, but it can be irritating, especially when you are opening and closing many Word documents one after another (for example when editing something or looking for something).

partial workaround Jan 22, 2010

dear peers

if you are bored like me to kill these zombies hundred times a day, I suggest you to close MS Word using the black little x, i.e. File>Close, instead of using the red big X, i.e. File/Exit

This way, you'll have a "void MS Word window" always available (and no zombies to kill, for now ;- )

Then, when you have to open the next MS Word file, use the option CTRL+O, inside the "void MS Word window", or simply double click on the file that you want to

this action will not open a second instance of MS Word, but rather the new document will be simply accommodated in your "void MS Word window"

Finally, you'll have to kill the damn zombie only when you'll switch off your PC at the end of business day

Well-known bonus from Trados Jan 23, 2010

It's a well-known bonus from Trados. I've made several attempts to solve the problem but never managed to succeed. I just live with it.

TOPIC STARTER
Yes, but... Jan 23, 2010

...what surprises me is the fact that everything was fine after first installation. The glitch came suddenly, months later, and never disappeared. Even a new installation of Word or Trados didn't help, as mentioned.
However, thanks to everybody who answered! I think some day I will upgrade to newer versions and everything will be fine (I hope so).

Yes, but... Jan 23, 2010

right remark Hans

I'm quite sure that this issue is linked to some of the last Windows XP and/or Office patches, as I've never seen it before a certain day, but at that time I had no time/will to do a rollback and now I have too much patches beyond

Fed up! Jan 23, 2010

All I know is that I'm sick of searching for solutions to overcome all sorts of software bugs. I guess we'll have to live with it and be happy that this particular problem is harmless. But still BEWARE. Don't mix it with the 'do you want to save the changes to some word doc'!!!

A corrupt Normal.dot might be the problem Jan 23, 2010

If you don't have any particular settings or macros in Normal.dot, you can safely delete it. Word will generate a new one next time you next start it.

Toolbar / Trados + Adobe writer Feb 9, 2010

i suppose the issue I have is linked to the below mentioned. I have Trados 7 and Adobe writer 6 (on XP and Office 2003) installed and I can't have both macros activated at the same time. I would have the same error message than you mentioned or I would have only Adobe writer in the menu as (Trados hidden). As soon as I untick pdfmaker.dot in tool - options - addins, Trados shows up again in the menu bar, but is empty. The icons are there and work fine. I tried this on three different PCs and it... I tried this on three different PCs and it always has the same behaviour. So the only 'solution' i found to avoid the pop-up message, is to untick the addin for Adobe writer (and just tick it again when i need to convert a file into a pdf) and live with the empty Trados menu (using the icons or shortcuts).

If anyone has another solution, i'd be glad to hear about it.

kind regards,

Steve

Adobe pdf maker is a renowned culprit ... Feb 9, 2010

but I have uninstalled this bloat-ware (with no regrets) one month ago and the issue remains ...

may be the culprit is still the Foxit pdf-maker, but the problem is that it is not a Word add-in so I can only uninstall it to see it it works

BTW, here is a similar thread
