English term

in the field

English to French Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial
The plant operator monitors the plant process at the Human Machine Interface (HMI) display units. The HMI displays the plant processes in 19 inch LCD monitors. The operator can navigate the display to view different part of the process within the plant and perform functions, such as
i.) Monitor and control the plant to produce the required quantity of water within specified quality constraints
ii.) Acquire and record operational data to facilitate efficient management of the plant
iii.) Manual override facilities at the control room and ///in the field;///
iv.) Display faults and alarms
v.) Archive

Could this means inside the plant ?

Thanks for your help.

Discussion

Proelec Sep 8, 2007:
I think it means here simply "outside the control room". Sometimes, it may be necessary to intervene on a given part of the process to remedy to a displayed fault, for example an obstruction or something similar, overriding the normal control functions.

Yes I should have mentioned that this concerns a desalination plant therefore all installations are inside the facilities hence my question.
Tony M Sep 8, 2007:
— I can't think it would make any sense at all to be able to control the plant remotely from off-site (might even be dangerous!) — unless, of course, it is an unmanned plant — but even there, 'in the field' would be a bit of an odd way to express it.
Tony M Sep 8, 2007:
Another example of the odd EN; usually, it would mean 'out in the field / on the job / on the road' etc. But here, it all depends a bit what the actual site is like, but I imagine they do mean 'out and about around the site' ...
