Incomplete definition in English It would be appropriate to expand the English definition to include the far more common meaning of 'gutter' in typography, i.e. the white space between two adjacent columns of text on the same page.

Each of these meanings of gutter has its corresponding translation in French: marge de reliure/petits fonds (for the current eng definition) and 'gouttière' for the space between columns on the same page.
Source: Personal experience as chief editor of a bilingual eng/fre learned journal printed in Belgium.
