Spanish term
pactos cruzados
Spanish to English
Other
History
indigenous peoples
Could anyone help me with this term please?
Hope someone can shed some light on 'pactos cruzados' in English please? I know about unilateral, bilateral, multilateral, but
this appears to be different.
Thanks in advance

conflicting agreements
"Contradictory agreements" or "deliberately contradictory [or conflicting] agreements" could work also. I believe that either of these alternatives are more idiomatic than the choices thus far offered.
Suerte.
Suerte.

Thanks Robert, great suggestions! I hadn't considered that option at all...it seems to make the text more understandable. Much appreciated! |

I agree with this and have found some examples on the net related to business in industry. So I'll go with your suggestion. Thanks for your rapid response Sergio!! |

And in 1939, the next year, when Hitler poured in his armies from the west, by secret, conniving agreement, Stalin poured in his red hoards from the east.

Backstabbing could work too.

Robert's answer is fine. In fact it was my first thought; I just decided to take it a step further in light of the context. i.e. the State made conflict-provoking pacts/agreements among different peoples. But yeah, nothing wrong with "conflicting agreements" (the term that is)!

Note from asker:
Thanks Rich, I agree with the idea that this was a conniving and backstabbing way of doing things, so it could work too, but my feeling is that cross agreement is a formally used term in some areas, eg. between corporations. Appreciate your input and prompt reply!! |
