Discussion

Jennifer Levey Sep 29, 2016:
When we compare Tony's comment "quite fiddly to get it just right" with Herbert's comment "on les supprime" we see which of them actually understands what's going on here. I guess one of them has never been to an outdoor event, stood at the front of the crowd, and wondered why they can understand nothing of what's happening on the stage, just in front of them, because of an 'echo' coming from badly set-up delay speakers - with a delay twice as long as that which would be experienced by folk at the back of the crowd if there were only front (un-delayed) speakers. In this context, there's no such thing as Herbert's "suppression" - only Tony's fiddly attempt to provide some (usually small) measure of compensation.
HERBET Abel Sep 29, 2016:
Tony M Sep 29, 2016:
For info... When I was head of the Sound Department for a leading theatrical supplier in the UK, one of my jobs as engineering consultant was to go round installing and above all setting up this kind of installation, using digital delay lines. Quite fascinating work, and quite fiddly to get it just right!

haut-parleur à retard

The keyword in the expression 'delay speaker' is 'delay', so it must be included in the translation.

Options, depending on how the sentence is structured: HP à retard, HP avec retard, HP retardé.

The expression might also be expressed as 'HP de signal differé'.

Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Of course, it is not the L/S itself which is delayed, but the signal reaching it: Just as a 'surround speaker' reproduces 'surround sound'

Haut-parleur relais

ou enceinte relais
(pour les grandes salles)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Although that is of course also true, it misses out the vital concept of 'delay' — they could perfectly well be 'relais' without necessarily being 'delayed' / Not significantly in audio terms.

whatever you relay, it's bound to be with some delay...

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : This is not about echo suppression, it is all about signal timing. / Yes, but 'echo suppression' is a quite different technique.

signal timing can be called "synchonization" or "delay" for putting in phase different signals
neutral Jennifer Levey : I suggest you read about frequency-shifting (used for howl-round/echo suppression) and see how it differs from time-shifting (used to deliver time-synchronous audio to listeners at the back of the room).

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ligne_à_retard_(sonorisation)
Voir exemple 1 page 8:
http://www.laregie-paca.com/sites/default/files/pdf/PDF_ABCs...

parfois appelé effet Haas:
http://www.sonorisation-spectacle.org/effet-haas.html

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enceinte_(audio)#Enceinte_de_r...

Peer comment(s):

agree GILLES MEUNIER

neutral Tony M : Regarding your closing comment, I believe it is almost EXCLUSIVELY in the low-level signal chain, since audio delay lines are now always digi and hence operate at line level. I'm not sure how current 'ligne à retard' is in FR? ('archaic' now in EN)
9 mins
neutral Jennifer Levey : 'lignes à retard' is too specific in terms of the technique/hardware used - and most likely incorrect in modern systems.
