It seems that a 'место' is a set size and that each truck can be slip into x number of 'местa'. I have seen the term "shipping unit" and so wonder if "unit" would suffice.
Some examples of its usage:
средний заказ на клиента равен 15 местам
средняя загрузка фуры - 1600 мест
Any idea what the UK term is?
