Does this mean 'unfamiliar elements'? I was thinking of 'elementos cercanos' as maybe 'local' or 'familiar' but I'm really not sure. Your thoughts would be appreciated!

Being that the text is referring to architectural elements, I would think that 'lejano' and 'cercano' are being used more literally to compare spacial relationships. So that the text would read something like, 'distant and close elements' or 'far away and nearby elements'.
