Spanish term

eterna esperanza blanca

Spanish to English Art/Literary Music
From a music biography:

The issue I have is that not so much the meaning but how it could be phrased. In my opinion the 'eternal white hope/hopefuls influenced by black music' sounds slightly strange and even a little racist.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

Discussion

Wil Hardman (X) (asker) Nov 29, 2007:
Thanks, it is interesting that you also think it is racist in Spanish. So now I won't worry about transmitting this connotation into English.
Salloz Nov 29, 2007:
Victoria Porter-Burns Nov 29, 2007:
Hi Wil, I see what you mean about the possible racist connotations the text might have, but if it's that, excuse the pun, black and white in the text, keep it I would say.

the symbol of eternal white hope

I read it as referring to 'white' artists/musicians forever striving to be and do as the 'black' artists/musicians do but never quite getting there

For example, many 'white' musicians try and try to be as successful as 'black' rappers etc. but never quite get it
