German term

Küchenfront

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) Nano-Products
"Anwendungsbereiche:

Edelstahlspülen, Küchenfronten und Arbeitsflächen aus Edelstahl oder Chrom, Edelstahlküchengeräte, Edelstahlhandläufe und Türklinken, Chromarmaturen, Metallverzierungen (KFZ, Fahrrad, Boot), Edelstahlverkleidungen (Fahrstühle), Metalllampen, Gartenmöbel etc. "

Areas of application for some sort of nano-cleaner for chrome and stainless steel surfaces. I can't make head or tail of "Küchenfront" and can't find a translation for it anywhere. Is it some peculiar way of saying "kitchen counter"? TIA for your assistance.

Discussion

Lori Dendy-Molz Nov 26, 2006:
Also, as my husband is in the nano biz and deals with kitchen surfaces, I can add that they want to avoid referring to the top of the cooker because nano coatings quickly get worn off by abrasive cleansers used by ambitious housewives.
Lori Dendy-Molz Nov 26, 2006:
Hi Rowan. I think they're still basically referring to the "front" of the cooker/stove, i.e., the door. They're kind of abusing the term "front" here, though. You could just say "surfaces," but that will probably get repetitive in your text.
Rowan Morrell (asker) Nov 26, 2006:
Another Example I have just come across this word again quite a bit later in the text. It again appears in a list of things a product can be applied to:

"Edelstahlspülen, Handläufe, Deko- Zieroberflächen, Küchenfronten (Herd etc.), Edelstahlmöbel, Fahrzeugteile (Chromverkleidungen) und vieles mehr."

The interesting thing about this example is that a "Herd" (cooker) is specifically mentioned as being part of "Küchenfronten". Don't know whether that inspires anyone afresh or causes any changes of mind. Many thanks to those who have contributed to far. I'm going with Lori's phrase at the moment, but I'm a little bit thrown by the use of "Herd" here, as it implies that Küchenfronten are more than just kitchen cabinets.

kitchen cabinet door fronts and drawer fronts

It's a bit more specific than just "surfaces." Surfaces would include countertops, but "Küchenfront" is really just the front surface of the cabinets and drawers.

agree Kim Metzger : An accurate description. I think kitchen cabinets would do. They appear to be stainless steel cabinets.

Yes, "cabinets" alone would work here. Thanks, Kim.

agree Cilian O'Tuama : maybe simply "kitchen fronts"?- can include doors of oven, dishwasher, fridge...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "In the end, I have decided to go with the literal "kitchen fronts", as this seems to cover a multitude of sins. Many thanks Lori and the peer graders, but thanks also to everyone else who offered an idea about this tricky word. Appreciate everyone's assistance."

kitchen surfaces (in general)

is how I see it, Langenscheit suggests "facade", but that seems not to fit well here

although "kitchen facades" does garner enough googles to be taken into consideration

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : you gotta distinguish it from Arbeitsflächen

agree Cilian O'Tuama : I agree it's the visible vertical surfaces, the horizontal ones being the Arbeitsflächen

kitchen cabinetry and woodwork

we're just collecting brochures and pamphlets to do our own kitchen. In one of them the headline is as above, obviously referring to what one sees first in the kitchen.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Cilian O'Tuama : maybe in a diff. context, but not suitable if they're made of Edelstahl or Chrom
