De term "massieven" komt veelvuldig voor als onderscheid to hagen........., could it be massive planting?.... row planting?..... large bushes?.......

From the context, this could only sensibly be large bushes. I say 'sensibly', because the sentence tells us that these things are grouped with hedges and have to be clipped in the same way as hedges. Can only be something akin to a hedge.
