stair core
The "núcleos" in a building are called "cores" or "service cores" in English. They're the spaces (or "boxes") where the elevators, stairs, plumbing, etc. go. See the explanation in this book (sorry, it won't let me copy and paste):

core staircase
I think this may be it, as opposed to individual staircases within a large building.

James Arthur Williamson
: It is stairwell in a single-family house and other traditional buildings. High-rise buildings, however, are constructed around a vertical core for lifts, emergency stairs, communications, etc. that are NOT called "stair cores".
