English term

possibilities vs. probabilities

English to Arabic Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
How can we differentiate between 'possibilities' and 'probabilities' here?

“The method of the enterprising is to plan with audacity and execute with vigor; to sketch out a map of possibilities, and then to treat them as probabilities.”—Christian Bovee

ما هو ممكن وما هو محتمل

possible = will happen if you work on it
probable = might happen if you work on it (level of uncertainty is higher)

Peer comment(s):

agree Ayman Hemeida : I would agree with both Nadia and Sam, however, I believe the terminology used by Sam is more accurate in this context.

disagree Arabic & More : I disagree with the English definitions here. Possible means there is potential for it to happen and probable means that it is highly likely to happen (the degree of certainty is higher).

الإمكانات مقابل (أو إزاء) الاحتمالات

الاحتمالات مقابل ما يمكن تحقيقه منها

الاحتمالات = الامكانيات
فلماذا اذا يستعمل القائل مفردتين مختلفتين للحديث عن شيئين مختلفين، إن كان للكلمتين نفس المعنى؟

This leads us to conclude that possibilities is indeed امكانيات/احتمالات while probabilities mean the things that are attainable among the possibilities.
In other words, we have 10 possibilities, but only 5 probabilities of succeeding.

To support my answer, please read:

Probable:
Oxford's dic. : likely to happen.

Merriam-Webster: likely to be or become true or real

Oxford Thesaurus: Likely

So, the probability here means the likeliness, not the possibility.
Hence, I see most suitable the Arabic equivalent, ما يمكن تحقيقه, sadly there is no one-word equivalent.
