As for any need to provide a "toned down" version, I'm not so sure this is necessary here; additionally, and with all due respect to Simon, certain "speech communities"---to use a term from sociolinguistics---might be less tolerant of lofty language (and variation in discourse patterns), but language, in-and-of-itself, is neither tolerant nor intolerant. Lots of scholarly work has been done on language change (and variation), and as more and more people use English on a daily basis around the world (as both a native and non-native language), not only words but also discourse patterns are affected in subtle (and sometimes, not so subtle) ways.
